MODERATORS

I met a trans lesbian socialist who does a lot of pro-Palestine organizing recently.

She also really likes Rick and Morty.

What’s wrong with Rick and Morty?

[–] segfault11@hexbear.net 44 points 2 months ago (2 children)

turned himself into the most wretched of commodities, a pickle

[–] Spongebobsquarejuche@hexbear.net 23 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Wretchedest shit I ever saw.

[–] booty@hexbear.net 9 points 2 months ago

Pickles are great, the only problem is that rickles are not vegan im-vegan

[–] Rom@hexbear.net 12 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (3 children)

Justin Roiland, the show's creator, is a domestic abuser and a sex pest

edit: and a pedo

This article many times cites that on a date in 2020 a woman said "no" but Roiland forced to suck his dick anyway... But then the article contradicts itself

Aaaand there's little to no screenshots most of the "evidence" is "this has been sent to NBC news and it says this and this" but the screenshots are nowhere to be found which in combination with the case being dismissed due to "lack of evidence" makes me question what they received and if they even received it (as I noted higher up this article either blows thing out of proportion or just lies)

I'm not saying that he's innocent obviously just that this article is as reliable as some gossip or hearsay

edit: they also cut the messages short (if they even are real this thing is not a screenshot just a bunch of styling to make the text on the website look like texts)

Okay just to be clear if these statements are 100% truthful then yeah he's a horrible person but I have no reason to trust NBC news

[–] Rom@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago

Yeah that's fair. There's enough other evidence to damn him though I think, like how Musk came to his defense over it

[–] TrueStalinistPatriot@hexbear.net 3 points 2 months ago

Eh i really just don't know what to think about it on one hand I kind of enjoy the show and want this to not be true and these kind of articles are often written with a verdict decided before the evidence even shows up but on the other hand this is a serious crime he's a billionaire most likely and oj Simpson was found not guilty which sort of proves trials at least in the us are not entirely reliable

An uncomfortably large number of the show's fans unironically like and identify with Rick's selfish pseudo-philosophical nihilism

Note: "An uncomfortably large number" does not mean "all" or even "most"

[–] TankieTanuki@hexbear.net 11 points 2 months ago

It's similar to The Sopranos in that regard. It doesn't make the shows bad though.

It’s a show geared towards ignorant people who think they’re smart so it makes perfect sense that it’s so popular among liberals.

[–] Spongebobsquarejuche@hexbear.net 19 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Those are a lot of big words. I just thought it was funny.

[–] TankieTanuki@hexbear.net 7 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

The hardest I've ever laughed in my life was after Beth shot Mr. Poopy Butthole in S02E04 (it's hard to explain why if you haven't seen it).

Granted, I was on vacation, hanging out with my best friends, and smoking weed, so the setting was ideal.

[–] SovietBeerTruckOperator@hexbear.net 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

No offense, but, are you new here?

[–] Spongebobsquarejuche@hexbear.net 25 points 2 months ago (2 children)

It’s brainless fun. It’s not like they’re listening to Joe Rogan. It’s a step or 2 above the family guy.

[–] TankieTanuki@hexbear.net 10 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I wouldn't even call the show "brainless" TBH. Family Guy is brainless. Rick and Morty is mostly low-brow humor, but it also has bits that leave me with something to ponder.

I'd put it (at least a few episodes of the show) at about the same level of profundity as Fight Club (1999) or Inception (2010), which are also good pieces of media that young people who are being exposed to existentialism for the first time tend to overrate. They also suffer from unfair backlash due to their overpopularity (tall poppy syndrome), which is the phenomenon we're seeing with Rick and Morty.

I think people call Rick and Morty "brainless" because they don't want to be perceived like the redditor who wrote the embarrassing "very high IQ" copypasta.

The copypasta author said that you need "a solid grasp of theoretical physics" to comprehend the show, which is ridiculous. As if you need a background in math to understand Rick's portal gun from a narrative perspective. It's a magical device that takes you to worlds where things are different. That's it.

The author also said "The humor is extremely subtle", which is not true. Some of the humor is clever (I enjoy the way that Dan Harmon subverts tropes) but almost none of it is subtle.

That's a totally fine way to consume it I suppose.

But R&M has been subject to probably more leftist critiques than any other media in the past 5ish years, most saying it sucks.

[–] Spongebobsquarejuche@hexbear.net 28 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Did you see the episode where he turns himself into a pickle?

[–] SovietBeerTruckOperator@hexbear.net 28 points 2 months ago (2 children)
[–] TankieTanuki@hexbear.net 6 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Memes aside, the pickle episode is the same one with the incredible therapist scene that @NinjaGinga@hexbear.net is referring to here.

Have you seen it?

[–] TankieTanuki@hexbear.net 9 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Were those leftist critiques, or just memes poking fun at the more embarrassing fans? I'd like to know what critiques you're referring to, because I haven't seen them.

I doubt there is any media out there that's free of liberalism.

[–] TankieTanuki@hexbear.net 14 points 2 months ago (1 children)

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 10 points 2 months ago
