The entire human race? Not exactly. As shown in the series' next installments, most of mankind still gets wiped out by the machines. Lying to the cop just keeps John Connor alive so the survivors can mount a meaningful resistance.

Yeah but it keeps members the species alive and free from the tyranny of the machines so, like, that's still a thing. Like how a few breeding pairs can 'save' a species on the brink of extinction
