what's funny about self-censoring?
The reactions people on the internet have make me laugh.
Used to be that swearing asserted my right to free self expression. But now I live in bizzaro world, where self-censoring is considered "uncouth behavior", so I occasionally enjoy censoring my swears just to reassert my right to free self expression.
The fact the people get upset about it is kind of hilarious.
It's considered stupid because it's catering to big Capitalism and their platforms like TikTok that mess with your views because you are using controversial words.
So it's expected to meet some resistance when you're on Lemmy.
100% agree.
I just have a chip on my shoulder about being made to speak in any particular way. So since I'm on Lemmy...
Nobody will care if you self-censor in a reasonable way, like simply not saying the word, or using euphemisms like goshdarn.
But writing f*ck is ridiculous
Yeah, sure, but that's exactly the point, the group is trying to dictate my free speech based on what they considered offensive. And not even for something significant like promoting violence or hate speech, just over the placement of an *. So I don't really care if saying f*ck is ridiculous, nor do I care if saying fuck is considered unnecessary, nor any of the other litany of ways people try to control the free speech of others.
I get that this is a very unpopular opinion on Lemmy, but honestly I don't give a f*ck.
This is like those people who argue that it's really punk to be conservative, because "woke" is mainstream or something.
I'll grant that it's contrarianism for its own sake. But I would disagree with the comparison.
The core value of expressing myself how I choose is being upheld by my (albeit asinine) contrarianism.
The core values of Punks on the other hand can not be boiled down to simple contrarianism or an "anti-mainstream" ideology. And frankly the "anti-woke" Conservative movement is damn near the polar opposite of Punk values. So co-opting the term "Punk" just to make Conservatism sound rebellious/edgy/cool undermines the point of both world views.
Also, being "anti-woke" sucks @$$, while not letting people tell me how to talk F*#ks hard.
