A single cooking show where contestants are confined by the same constraints that the average prole contends with would be very worth watching. Start that shit from the grocery store too. Bonus points for fewest dishes dirtied.
I've seen shows where they give amateur home cooks professional grade equipment and high quality ingredients (particularly, a baking show where all of the contestants have pretty much never baked before), which is an interesting shift from the formula, sure, but what I want to see is professional chefs having to cook in a small apartment kitchen. Limited counter space, older budget appliances, no fancy tools or equipment. They should have at most what my mother has access to - standard home kitchen equipment, lucky to even have tongs and oven mitts and more than one whisk. And they have ingredients from the supermarket. On a working class budget. Maybe a week long competition cycle, where they have to meal plan, shop, and prepare a week of meals on a reasonable working class budget for a week's groceries. So they have to come up with multiple ways to use the things that are only affordable in bulk, and inventive ways to use basic kitchen tools. I agree with you on bonus points for less dirty dishes. Make whoever dirtied the most dishes wash all of the dishes.
At a supermarket...
"Look at this. It's really nice." [blurred label] She puts it right back.
"Why'd ya put it back?"
"It's $20."
"$20 a bottle! Are you [beeping] me! Have you had it before?"
"Yeah. My last boyfriend was a nepo baby."
"Nice."
"Not really." Laughing. "Well, kind of nice."
