A bit late and maybe not quite the answer you're after, but if you've got a home server of any kind - even an USFF PC running Proxmox - I recommend going down that route. It's not for everyone, especially if you need the OpenWRT to be providing Wifi, but if you've got a home server already it's a no-brainer, IMHO.
So you're saying running openwrt in a VM is superior to a dedicated box?
I'm currently trying to decide which route to go. I've got a Google WiFi router flashed with openwrt, I'm trying to figure out if it supports VLANs or has enough oomph to do what I want.
But also I'm setting up proxmox to play with, and I have a 4 port NIC in the mail, I was thinking about virtualizing opnsense or openwrt.
Care to share more of your thoughts on this?
My main concern, and the concern of others I've read online, is that if my server goes down for any reason, the whole network goes down. But with a dedicated box, it's more likely to just keep chugging no matter what.
Also I've heard the network configuration can be harder, more confusing for the VMs and different services running on them (ngix for example). This is a big concern for me because I suck at networking and this will be my first time with VLANs.
