More importantly, the US had an election during the Civil War.

It's a little different when you're being invaded by someone with 3.5 times your population and a significant investment specifically into election interference though. Especially when your constitution specifically allows it.

Difference between then and now is the ability to shove a missile up someone's ass from a 1000km away.

Much easier to vote when you don't have to worry about the voting locations being directly targeted by long range weapons.
