Yeah I think playing 1 through 3 is my plan. I've seen a little bit of footage of the DQ3 Remaster, it looks pretty nice! I haven't really liked the visual style of the HD-2D games but I like the look of DQ3 for some reason. I think it's that the way they handle the lighting and shaders looks more appealing to me. I know DQ1 and 2 are getting the same treatment soon as well so that's pretty cool.
It's the same graphics engine they used for Octopath Traveler. I think some other JRPGs got similar remasters.
But yeah. Dragon Quest 3 is a blast to play. It's amazing the NES could handle it. I think it was 5? That also released at the end of the SNES's lifespan. Those two didn't see much distribution in North America because they came so late. It's nice the series has gotten re-releases over the years. The first Monsters game is coming out (or is already out), which sucked up a significant portion of my childhood. I played it more than Pokémon.
That’s what I mean, I remember both of the Octopath Travelers having really intense lighting effects that I thought were pretty unpleasant to look at. But for some reason it doesn’t bother me in DQ3 HD as much even though it’s in the same style. I looked it up and Live A Live got the same treatment and looks fine as well so maybe they’ve been adjusting the style recently.
DQ Monsters is definitely one I want to try at some point too. I never got into any of the monster collecting games besides Pokemon and it feels like I missed out on a lot of good games.
