There has been evidence against him since the early 2000s that he abused girls and young women. He wiggled his way out of a case in 2008, but he knew it was over this time. It is absolutely thinkable that he killed himself in order to not have to actually go to prison.

And notably, the AG that let him off with a wrist slap plea deal was appointed by the current president to be Secretary of Labor.

In 2008 he was protected by his influential clients. Second time around he was enough of a liability they instead got the evidence suppressed and made sure he couldn't make good on his blackmail threat.
