No shit. That's why I'd never say something like this. They suffered more than I likely ever will. Which is why it's repulsive to see this quote from someone who didn't have to worry about either of those things.

Claiming that you can't use quotes without personally experiencing the same is a truly crushing blow for literature and journalism, not to mention memes, posters and other motivational content.
