#3 makes me think its sudden explosion in popular discourse is akin to the conservative panic over raceplay: taking a weird niche porn category and treating it like nonfiction so one can hold it up as proof of how "d-generate" society is.

I cannot emphasize enough that you are 100% correct and that some of the people assuming that there are large groups of people actually living out this niche fetish are on this website with us.
