The best take I've heard so far is this: there is no strategy. Pulling the levers is the point unto itself. He likes tariffs. Like most things, he doesn't understand how they work. Maybe he thinks China pays them. But it's not part of some economic plan. Clearly. Trying to sort it out is to delve into the twisted mind of a dim-witted narcissist.

He's not trying to accomplish anything. The effects however, may entertain him. Every justification is post-hoc.

He might be an idiot but he's still useful. The tariffs are another price increase, he gets to bluster and blame other governments and leaders for the prices while working class folks adjust to the new costs. Then businesses unaffected by tariffs get to raise their prices commensurately. And if the tariffs get canceled the prices can stay up. Just like with COVID his first term
