Thanks. Maybe there should be a rule to provide a source for the image. We do live in post-truth world.

Reverse image search will get you the results you're looking for.

[–] atro_city@fedia.io 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Why put the burden on the reader, not the poster?

[–] Devadander@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

You’re the one making the unwarranted accusations against the post. Where’s your evidence for your proclamations? A reverse image search should be your first step if you’re questioning it.

[–] LowtierComputer@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It is easier for the poster to add in relevant details. Plus on a large scale multiple readers don't have to burn each of their time searching for the source the poster likely already has.

[–] Devadander@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

But in lieu of that, a quick reverse image search instead of claiming ‘I see Reeboks’ would be the next step a reasonable internet traveler should take

[–] LowtierComputer@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Yeah probably.

The amount of energy needed to refute bullshit is an order of magnitude bigger than that needed to produce it.

Brandolini's law

Put simply, I or anybody else can generate a bunch of fake images, give them a titles e.g "Pyramids were launchpads for aliens" and it takes way longer for you to disprove it than for me to create more disinformation. I could be posting another picture about "the first human skull was found in Australia 10,000 years ago" while you're debating whether pyramids really are launchpads for alien spaceships. This entire discussion could've been avoid by @PugJesus@lemmy.world adding a source to the image from the onset. Then all I'd have to do is click on it and verify that the webpage is trustworthy.

The alternative is Hitchen's razor

What can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence.

I could say "@PugJesus@lemmy.world asserted that this image is true, but provided no evidence, therefore I can dismiss it".

I would encourage you to look up the difficulties of debunking myths and why misinformation is so pervasive online. We shouldn't be normalising unsourced claims, otherwise we will have more people sharing images and texts without thinking just because they can get reactions.

The name of the community is "History Porn". It does sound memey, but that doesn't mean we should put users at risk of believing or sharing false information.

There is absolutely a burden on the content consumer to get their content. This is not absolving the poster from sourcing their material. I am not and have not discussed that. But you are absolute correct. It is difficult to unspread misinformation. That’s why I’m calling out the comment that IS spreading misinformation. Not OP, who posted a truthful picture and caption.

But you gotta find it rather ironic that the commenter decrying a post truth world is also the one spreading falsehoods about the pic? They’re being exactly what they’re crying about. They are the ones spreading lies about the picture. And then you get the armchair internet experts like the follow up comment ‘they’re not dressed warm enough I call bs’. It’s hilarious. And yet those ‘skeptics’ don’t see their contribution to the problem

*asks question*

"OMG stop spreading falsehoods"

*thanks for adding source*

"oMg So iRonIc aMiRite???"

they should be posting sources

"jUsT dO a ReVersE iMagE seArCh!!!11!1"

🙄 yes sir, you have been such a voice of reason in this discussion.
