Why such high tariffs on Moldova? They’re a poor nation.

I have updated the post with a link to full list. Vietnam got 46% lmao.

for (c in countries) {
  c.tariffs = Math.random();
}

Sadly there are many reports, that it's just

for (c in countries) {
    c.tariffs = math.max(10,
        (c.exportsTo(us) - c.importFrom(us)) /
        (c.exportsTo(us)*2))
}

when will the snarky code comments start using functional programming

[–] Kornblumenratte@feddit.org 3 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Something like

tariff export import  = max(10, (100 * (1 - import/export))
map countries tariff

?

That might be the chatGPT answer to Trump asking how tariffs can make America great again lmao

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago

50% for a small nation surrounded by South Africa and for a small bit of France off the coast of newfoundland

[–] kandoh@reddthat.com 17 points 10 months ago

It's the trade deficit masquerading as a tarrif - Moldova sells more than it buys from America because American stuff is expensive and Moldova can't afford to buy American goods so it gets hit with "reciprocal" tariffs on it's exports.

I read somewhere that the theory is countries that don't purchase ad much from the us as the us buys from said country got more tarrifs because in trumps mind they're losing money.

Reporters could recreate the entire list exactly by asking ChatGPT/Grok/Claude/Gemini what would be an easy way to tariff other nations.
The tariff % is simply the US trade deficit with that country divided by imports from it.

It's not a theory, they published the formula, that's just straight up what it is.
