I'm listening to the audiobook of the Gormenghast trilogy and the names of the characters are just amazing. After the initial ๐ซข the characters grow larger than their names.
What awesome books.
here are some of the names.
Dr Prunesquallor. a really nice kind competent character
Lord Sepulchrave. The sensitive lord.
Flay. The loyal brave and smart personal assistant to Sepulchrave
Lady Fuschia. The teen daughter
Swelter. The head chef, a disgusting character
Nanny Slag. A sweet old lady.
Deadyawn. A school teacher.
Dog eye, a student.
Longtime since I read these. Seem to recall them being highly entertaining but taking rather a while to get going
Ooh had to look it up. That looks fun. Added them to my endless thread list
In the books absolutely no character ever regards the name of another character as anything other than a name with no meaning. It completely normalises the names until we remember again how absurd they are to our own ear.
To me Deadyawn is the most inspired name.
