I'm curious why this kid was even tested given that they only had "mild respiratory symptoms".

Says in the article that it was discovered to be bird flu during influenza subtyping.

Well yes, but why was that test done to begin with if they only had mild symptoms? Most people don't go to the doctor because they have a bit of a cough.
