It's an easy mistake for a player to make. But can you imagine how incompetent the character would have to be to make such a fundamental mistake? I hope the DM let you roll against WIS or something.

Or at least raise an eyebrow and ask "Are you sure?" from behind the screen because that'll get any player to second guess what they're about to do.
