The VP is a pretend job, she hasn't really done anything? I will be watching how she responds to Netanyahu's visit, though.

She's snubbing his speech so maybe???

[-] BoxedFenders@hexbear.net 3 points 5 months ago

lol she's not snubbing Benji, she just can't attend because of a scheduling conflict. Her office has reiterated that a private meeting between them will take place. Make no mistake, she is just as much of a Zionist as Biden even though she sheds more crocodile tears for Gazan children.

[-] queermunist@lemmy.ml 2 points 5 months ago

Biden would never let a scheduling conflict get in the way from a Bibi visit. I do think there's a chance for a different approach.

But again, this is gambling. You might as well be telling me I shouldn't buy lottery tickets!

It is not a pretend job. She is complicit. And even if it was, which is not, she has been side by side Biden supporting him as he carries out his genocide. Moreover, she is deep in AIPAC’s pocket. The fact that you believe there is any innocent Democrat in power is concerning.

Dude, she's as complicit as you- (i am assuming) a US Citizen are...moreover if you pay taxes and vote.... shame on yoy baby killer.

Okay all true, but the VP is still a pretend job. Maybe not as much as it was before but the VP doesn't actually have very much power. Unless the president is ~~article 12'd~~ amendment 25'd.

[-] theilleist@lemmy.ml 5 points 5 months ago

Did you mean the 25th amendment? Article 12 just describes the process for electing the president and VP.

Yes, if she was actually innocent she would have been pushing to have Biden removed from office via the 25th Amendment so that she could take over his job and end the genocide as soon as possible. She's a careerist and would never dare risk her own political career for something like that, so instead she's meekly following along and making small gestures without committing.

But, even a careerist could see the benefits of being the US president that ended support for apartheid and genocide.

Don't get me wrong, my expectations for US politicians are really low. It's not like I'm donating money to her or anything, I'm just going to take a little bit of time to mail in a ballot because she might be less genocidal than Biden or Trump.

She's not standing up against the genocide as Vice, but she literally hasn't actually done anything to advance it either.

And that's my red line - no doing genocide.

She will do more marginally reasonable rhetoric about Palestinian suffering while the material policy of 100% support for Israel will not be changed in the slightest. She wouldn't have been the pick otherwise.

[-] queermunist@lemmy.ml 3 points 5 months ago

There's a limit to how much she can push rhetoric before it causes a fundamental break within US society. Already we're seeing unprecedented criticism of Israel and support for Palestinian resistance among USians, and the more she pays lip service to voters on this issue the starker the contradictions become between her words and her actions.

That's not a bad result at all.

[-] nat_turner_overdrive@hexbear.net 4 points 5 months ago

I think you're going to need more than hope and guessing to make the case for California's top cop being in any way interested in stopping the genocide

[-] queermunist@lemmy.ml 2 points 5 months ago

I'm making the case for gambling, to be clear.

Biden, probably more than most American politicians, is a dedicated Zionist. He's not just supporting Israel for his career or because that's what his donors want or because he's advancing his Party's agenda, he's doing it for the love of the game. There was never even the slimmest chance he would stop Israel from committing all the atrocities it wants.

Harris is just a careerist, and she will eventually have to run for reelection. If conditions force her to break with Israel to save herself she'd do it in a heartbeat.

[-] nat_turner_overdrive@hexbear.net 2 points 5 months ago

Harris staffers have described support for Israel as one of her core beliefs, and she's bad at politics. Wasn't even going to win her own state in the primary. I think Harris suddenly breaking with the party and security state is very unlikely.

Gambling is always unlikely. 🤷‍♀️

Besides she might be funny now that they can't hide her anymore.

Here's Abby Martin's rundown of Harris' bona fides: https://x.com/AbbyMartin/status/1815475592516837774

-Regular AIPAC speaker

-Compared Selma & US Civil Rights struggle to her pro-Israel activism

-Called BDS “anti-semitic”

-Co-sponsored resolution against Obama in support of illegal settlements

-Fmr campaign director says: “Her support for Israel is central to who she is.”

-Hosted White House event promoting Israel’s atrocity propaganda about Oct 7

-After calling for “immediate ceasefire” in March, clarified she meant Biden’s temporary pause

-Biden officials say: “There’s no dispute on policy” between Biden & Harris on Gaza

[-] averyminya@beehaw.org -1 points 5 months ago

She was the first one to call for a ceasefire and asking Israel to give aid to Gazans. She may be complicit but to say that she's done nothing seems inaccurate.
