Palestinian Football Association president Jibril Rajoub has refused to shake hands with Israel’s representative at the Fifa congress on April 30. Susan Shalabi, the Palestinian FA vice-president, told Reuters that Rajoub said: “I cannot shake the hand of someone the Israelis have brought to whitewash their fascism and genocide. We are suffering.” Fifa boss Gianni Infantino had urged the two representatives to shake hands to “give hope to the children” amid “complex matters”. Rajoub had just delivered a speech pleading with Israeli clubs to stop basing teams in the occupied West Bank. “To be put in a position to have a handshake after everything that was said – this negates the whole purpose of the speech that the general [Rajoub] was giving,” said Shalabi. Fifa said ‌last ‌month it would take no action against the Israel Football Association or Israeli clubs, citing the unresolved legal status of the West Bank under public international law.

Stealing from a supermarket doesn't carry the same "moral meaning" as stealing someone's wallet or looting a small business, argues Ash Sarkar on Novara Live. Shoplifting falls short of being an "act of resistance" because it lacks collectivity, she says. But what about a mass organised shoplifting campaign, targeting companies that don't pay the minimum wage?

In Maryland, a plan to quietly turn a warehouse into a multi-million dollar ICE detention center is now on hold after the community fought back. Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill has allocated $45 billion dollars to fast-tracking these ICE detention centers, at times leveraging the military to so do. Despite the Trump administrations attempts to force this along, the community in Maryland will stand firmly with immigrants.

Israel fired what appears to be white phosphorus on southern Lebanon despite a US-brokered ceasefire. In the footage, taken on April 28, plumes of white smoke drift through a residential area at the foot of a hill - before a mid-air explosion occurs and a new curtain of white smoke appears. “The second round is an air-burst 155mm M825-series projectile that contains white phosphorus,” Mark Hiznay, associate director in the Crisis, Conflict and Arms Division at Human Rights Watch, confirmed to Novara Media. White phosphorus is a toxic substance that ignites when it comes into contact with oxygen, and is capable of inflicting horrific burn injuries and setting buildings on fire. It has some legal uses but firing it in a populated area or at civilian infrastructure is a violation of international humanitarian law. Israel's military issued an urgent warning on Tuesday to residents in more than a dozen villages and towns in southern Lebanon, urging them to evacuate northward immediately and signalling an imminent attack. The warning said the action was necessary due to Hezbollah’s reported violation of the ceasefire agreement with Israel. It is not known if any of the homes pictured in the video clip were inhabited at the time the munitions were dropped, or if they had been evacuated. Last month Human Rights Watch said Israel unlawfully fired artillery containing white phosphorus over homes in the the southern Lebanese town of Yohmor on 3 March. “The Israeli military’s unlawful use of white phosphorus over residential areas is extremely alarming and will have dire consequences for civilians,” Ramzi Kaiss, Lebanon researcher at Human Rights Watch, said. “The incendiary effects of white phosphorous can cause death or cruel injuries that result in lifelong suffering.”

Zohran Mamdani has called on King Charles to return a giant diamond associated with British colonial plunder to India. The Koh-i-Noor diamond has been in British hands since the 1849 annexation of Punjab, when 10-year-old Maharaja Duleep Singh was forced to surrender it – along with his lands – to Queen Victoria. New York City mayor Mamdani was speaking ahead of his appearance at a ceremony at the 9/11 memorial and museum in Manhattan, honouring victims of the 2001 attacks. Asked what he might talk to King Charles about if the pair met, Mamdani said: “If I was to ‌speak to the King separately from that [the wreath-laying ceremony], I would probably encourage him to return the Koh-i-Noor diamond.” India has repeatedly sought the return of the 105.6-carat gemstone, calling it a "valued piece of art with strong roots in our nation's history". The diamond is currently set in the crown of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

Barnsley city council has been a Labour stronghold throughout its 50-year history – but pollsters reckon it could flip to Reform. Out on the street, few people in this former mining town were willing to tell Novara Media’s Harriet Williamson that they intend to vote Reform – but it was clear that satisfaction with the Labour government is low. “People here don’t have a single good thing to say about Keir Starmer,” Harriet concluded. Two Jewish men were stabbed in north London yesterday in what the Metropolitan police are treating as an antisemitic terrorist incident. Jonathan Hall KC, the independent reviewer of government terrorism legislation, has blamed pro-Palestine protesters for inciting antisemitic violence. On Novara Live, Barry Malone says it's "disturbing" how people involved in the pro-Israel lobby have weaponised yesterday’s antisemitic attack “in an attempt to tamp down on the right to protest”.

President Trump called CBS correspondent Norah O’Donnell a “disgrace” for reading out the words of the man accused of trying to assassinate him over the weekend. In an email to family members, the 31-year-old suspected shooter Cole Allen wrote: “I am no longer willing to permit a pedophile, rapist and traitor to coat my hands with his crimes.” Assuming that Allen was talking about him, Trump repeated the false claim that he had been “totally exonerated” of sexual crimes. “I’m not a rapist. I didn’t rape anybody. I’m not a paedophile,” he raged, adding: “You should be ashamed of yourself for reading that.”

Morgan McSweeney told MPs yesterday that seeing photos of Mandelson and Epstein together was like “a knife through my soul” – even though the pictures were already in circulation. We shouldn’t be surprised, says James Butler on Novara Live. The idea that behind-the-scenes figures like McSweeney and Dominic Cummings are political geniuses is massively inflated – and often depends on luck.
