As ably described by GSK over at Retronauts:

What's this? A vertically-scrolling sci-fi shooting game, originally developed and distributed by Nichibutsu in arcades in 1987 and never ported to home platforms until now; one or two players are tasked with taking on the "Dark Empire" through a non-linear progression of stages, with spacecraft that possess a variety of peculiar armaments, most notably a Time Bomb which briefly rewinds the happenings on the playfield when activated, with even the player's death being reversible if one throws out enough bombs in quick succession. (One particularly noteworthy enhancement offered with this reissue is a visible stage/loop display, which can be helpful in figuring out how to reach the ending.)

Also, the soundtrack is wild!

It's history day 😆 ! I've been fascinated about the "caravan" style shooter genre since I first heard of it, so here's an interview on the subject from a developer who was part of their creation.

Two interesting videos posted there: 1st is an examination of Biohazard Battle for the Sega Genesis/Megadrive, and second is an interview with Krystian Majewski (LazyDevs on YouTube) about his Pico-8 shmup project.

Tiger-Heli was a large influence on Raiden, and is one of the great classic shooters. Glad to see it getting the M2/Shot Triggers treatment!

You might be able to tell, but the Aleste series is one of my all-time favorite series, and thus Compile is one my favorite studios. Turns out Paste magazine of all things has a run down of what they consider the 20 "best" Compile shmups. But I think they're all good!

One of those shmups that isn't available on western digital storefronts -- and in fact doesn't seem to have any non-PS2 ports at all -- Homura is an interesting "flying person" type shmup (kind of like Castle of Shikigami).

It hit the U.S. eShop and Steam on May 2nd. There is also a limited number of physical copies to be released sometime later this year. From the eShop page:

"Where courage and conviction dictate, pull the trigger of your heart!"

"Trigger Heart Exelica", a shooting game with a famous family of mecha families released in the arcades in 2006, has finally been reissued on Nintendo Switch™! In addition to Arcade Mode and Story Mode, Arrange Mode and Training Mode have been added. In addition to Arcade Mode and Story Mode, Arrange Mode and Training Mode have been added, as well as Vertical Screen Mode and Internet Ranking Mode. A sound mode with additional arrangement sources will also be included. This is the culmination of all the hard work that shooting game fans have put into this title.

Not 100% SHMUP related but hopefully of interest - someone wrote a blog entry on their journey building an arcade cabinet from second hand materials

Hi folks! IsThereAnyDeal.com is a price tracking website for PC games that allows users to make custom watchlists -- so I made a list just for shmups. It's probably missing a couple games here and there (and it deliberately doesn't include twin-stick or rail shooters just out of laziness), so feel free to let me know if there's anything that's missing!
