with people with good skills to defuse a tense situation at the workplace I mean everyone of you, because I suck at this and I'm sure anyone here is better than I am with this kind of stuff.

Tense situation is a karen yelling at one of my colleagues because her father's operation was postponed because I kid you not 4 doctors called in sick today. Rumor has it they're striking for better pay.

My instinctive response if someone starts behaving like a childish, snippy, entitled karen and acts passive-aggressively is to leave and ignore the person. In this case, the karen started ranting to my coworker, getting all snippy and wouldn't shut up. A rational conversation with people that irrational is impossible, so I kept doing my job, transferring a patient to another ward.

I never expected this colleague to tell me she felt let down because I didn't help her to deal with said karen. She said simply staying next to her would have sufficed. I told her I'd do that next time someone yells at her.

I consider myself lucky because I can leave to do my job but my colleague was trapped with this person.

My questions to you people with good social skills:

does it really help to simply stay next to my colleague, letting her do the talking while I do nothing but looking at the karen in the eye?

what if, each time the karen opens her mouth I repeat 'calm down' ad nauseam till she either tires, shuts up or walks away?

what do you say or do to support your coworkers while they're being verbally abused that somewhat defuses the situation?

what if avoiding conflict is a trait of mine to the point that I let people walk all over me?

how do you resist the urge to walk away? Situations like this trigger my fight or flight response.

what if I have to do this with a man and it gets physical? If somebody strikes me and I strike back, and I can guarantee you I'm striking back, I'm as guilty as the first aggressor.

I've always wondered this. Like, are the people predicting hard as to who'll win? And how the hell do they make all of the shirts and hats that the winning team will celebrate by wearing just in time that they won the big trophy by?

Have other teams gotten things made for them once they got far in like the NBA Finals, the World Series or so but when they lost, they had to discard the made hats and shirts?

How does any of this work?

Earlier, I used to have dreams. Sometime during my depression I stopped having them. I started going to therapy and few months later I started having dreams again.

So if medication can affect the ability (?) to have dreams, can it also affect nature or tone of dreams?

Aside from criminals and oblivious people who carelessly disregard the things they do that would later have warrants issued for their arrest. Why isn't there any system in place that notifies people whether or not they have warrants?

The only way to find out, least in the US, is to call police departments or certain county offices. But almost nobody would want to do that, so why isn't there a way to like send a text or an e-mail or even a letter in the mail saying "hey, something happened involving you and a warrant has been issued, might want to do something about it".

I mean sure, if anyone got that notification, there could be chances that they'd run. But, that's all the more reason to add another charge once they are caught.

I could see it going either way.

With free access, people would be more inclined to go to the doctor for simple and small things, but in return would probably catch more serious issues early and have better access to treatment, therefor reducing the need for intensive and specialized healthcare.

Without, people avoid going to the doctor for small stuff, but end up having to go in with more complicated issues later on.

This might be a bit too personal but whatever...

Context is that my last job wasn't exactly great, and it just happened to be when US science was having issues, so I left for a position in EU. Only joined for less than 2 months so still new. Problem is now that I've settled in a bit, issues at the new workplace have been surfacing... I know academia/academic research is known for having "difficult personalities" but this is beginning to get comical. Edit: in both cases it is the supervisor that is toxic; I have nothing against my coworkers. In this case it's referring to what appears to be lots of micromanagement and favoritism, probably some denying of holiday leave that may or may not be legal by the country's employment laws

On one hand I don't want to deal with a bad workplace again just to avoid the toll on my own health (which did happen a lot during the past year). But on the other hand it is nice to have an EU-based position (especially since I'm not an EU citizen so my job is also linked to my ability to stay in a country), and if I got into this situation two-times in a row what's guaranteeing that it won't happen again

I'm... open to all suggestions

Like do they actually, reliably effect change in the way the activists intend?

Have they worked against Israel? Did they work against Apartheid South Africa? Could they work against Trump's America?

My hunch is that they don't, really, but can be a useful promotional tool for other issues. Like don't buy American is a simple message. If people will listen to that, they may listen to reasons why, which maybe could build a movement.

But on the whole I am very sceptical, and would be interested in any reasons for or against boycotts.

I mean classical music: playing a piano, a clarinet or a cello professionally at an opera or theater.

I have a job I'd describe as easy, is not a job I had to go to college for, it pays the bills, I don't like it nor hate it but it doesn't motivate me. There is some micromanaging sometimes but most of the time I'm left to work alone, which is good.

Studying a musical instrument would involve extensive micromanaging: first from your professor, then from your conductor, something that'd destroy your motivation.

I consider every art related job to be like this: Jobs in the humanities are known to be very scarce, meaning lots of graduates compete for a very reduce number of positions, meaning employers get away offering the "lucky" ones less, meaning employers can micromanage more than usual, because they know graduates don't have that many options. Art could be painting, sculpture, architecture, theater, museums...

Can an actual musician chime in? This was maybe too dark.

What do you all think is an acceptable time frame for responding to unanswered posts?

Is there a general rule for when it's too late to give an answer?

Signal can then claim it has no control over what user-made Add-ons are installed and used for. They just support the framework, which is not illegal, just like media players support playing illegal content but don't create such content.

For people out of the loop: EU soon likely enacts Chat Control 2.0 which will force chat services to hand over keys so governments can read all your personal messages.

I currently have to use Subtitles, kinda annoying. And I despise dubs since the voice acting is so bad, I mean like the emotions in the voice, its so emotionless in English.

I am a English speaker with some fluency in Cantonese and Mandarin.

How difficult is Japanese? Am I gonna waste a lot of time?

Also what's the best resource to learn?

Edit: This question attracted way more interest than I hoped for! I will need some time to go through the comments in the next days, thanks for your efforts everyone. One thing I could grasp from the answers already - it seems to be complicated. There is no one fits all answer.

Under capitalism, it seems companies always need to grow bigger. Why can't they just say, okay, we have 100 employees and produce a nice product for a specific market and that's fine?

Or is this only a US megacorp thing where they need to grow to satisfy their shareholders?

Let's ignore that most of the times the small companies get bought by the large ones.
