I currently have an 8gb ddr4 3200mhz stick of ram in my pc. If I were to pop another 8gb ddr4 but 2400mhz in there, would doubling up on gb outweigh performance lost from the speed going down to 2400mhz?

Coming from someone who is "childfree" and in my line of work sometimes maybe most of the times, I think I see dads that maybe shouldn't have been.

I get that I'm harsh, and I can't tell from one example obviously but I feel sometimes there's social pressure to have kids.

So for you, What makes you a father figure.

At work I have been given a task to organize some documents. Please help me, I'm overwhelmed.

TLDR: Manually separate PDFs into individual documents (variable page length), assign each document to a category, and identify the date of the document. Need a fast way to do it. On Windows.

Here is a longer description of my task.

Goals:

  • Chop up the bulk PDFs to create 1 PDF per document
  • Sort each of them into one of 10 categories
  • Identify the date in each document. Include it in the filename. Optimally, insert it into the document itself (e.g. top right hand corner of first page, in the margin so it doesn't cover anything)
  • Would be nice:
    • Rerun the OCR; I think it could be better. At home I would use ocrmypdf
    • Clean up the scans: fix alignment, remove artifacts etc (only if effort is trivial and 0% risk of data loss)

Inputs:

  • Printed out, it's a stack of papers about 6-8cm tall
  • Has been provided in bulk PDFs about 40-60 pages each
  • Most individual documents are 2-5 pages in length, with some being 10-20

Document characteristics:

  • Scanned on an actual scanner; some carefully, others not
    • Have been optimized for small smile size
    • Mostly black & white, some grey scale
  • Business documents, records, official correspondence etc. Typed, not handwriting. English.
  • They are all in some sort of standardized format, but from many different sources, each with their own format
  • Have had some sort of OCR applied to them; it isn't very good especially when the scans aren't perfect.

Work environment and constraints

  • Because I am at work, I am using a standard Windows workstation that is set up for office (not developer) use.
  • I have asked for the full version of Adobe Acrobat to be installed, because they have a license for that. I've never used it. Maybe it will do all of this but based on how profoundly annoying Reader is, I am skeptical.
  • I can install things that don't require administrator privileges. I can ask for administrator to install something if I am reasonably confident it'll be useful and safe but I can't be annoying asking for things all the time. I strongly prefer open source tools.
  • Cannot under any circumstances use anything online, cloud, external AI. All data must stay local.
  • I might be able to justify using linux in the future if this is an ongoing task (it might be) so linux-only suggestions are welcome but won't be implemented first-line. Desktop applications > self hosted servers or command line.

When I got banned off from Reddit because of a bot, I feel like I lost part of me in a way, because I was getting my news there, I had friends and suddenly I lost it

Here however I feel like more of myself because I get to post whatever I want without pressure or faking anything

And if they are digital, how has there not been any sort of hack? ‘Anonymous’ or foreign actors would surely love to have a chance to air the dirty laundry, no?

Since I was eleven, every five or so years, something happens where I get really upset or stressed, and during those four times so far, I end up seeing this made-up thing. The thing I see is a mythical creature, and it is not supposed to be kind, in fact it is meant to be evil, but when I hallucinated it, it was incredibly gentle, and I honestly felt so comforted. It always felt completely real, like an actual person was standing there. The first time it happened was right after I saw something about the creature in the news and a magazine, and I was feeling very lonely.

Each time, the hallucination happened in public (first time was at school) and I lost real time, once for half an hour a few years ago. They always looked a bit different, like a new individual of the species each time, and sometimes there were two of them which talked to me and also talked amongst themselves during the conversation. I have not had any other hallucinations and for months now I feel sad that this being is fictional because of what I experienced. I feel conflicted about that, since this creature is meant to be an evil one that hurts or even kills innocent people, not something that comforts people.

I keep finding myself looking at media (movies, shows, books, etc) that has this creature in it. In one way, I feel comforted, and in another, it makes me feel saddened. I actually feel like I've become addicted to looking things about this creature up. I'd say I spend about an hour each day looking into it. It scratches an itch on the brain. There are very few pieces of media where the creature is portrayed as good rather than evil.

I can't take a lot of cold medicines, but I wish I was unconscious right now.

What makes you feel better in this situation? Hot showers? Whiskey? Soup? Watching that comfort movie your mom put on when you were a kid?

edit 3 - me humming the melody https://voca.ro/1fiQl9tlBHoh I also want to stress again it wasn't a slow or chill song. It had energy very similar to I Feel For You by Chaka Khan, and the melody I'm humming was made up by what sounded like the opening piano in Head Over Heels by Tears For Fears, except in major. The singer's vocals also complimented the melody since the vocals had a similar intonation as the melody I'm humming. I only caught one or two words but I swear she says "nothing really matters" or "nothing ever matters" "nothing truly matters" or "nothing matters"

It's an 80s pop/dance/house song. There's this dancy, warm electric bass that's constantly in the background. The electric bass sounds like this (4:15 minute mark) the melody of it (the bass part) also sounded a little similar to what is in that video.

Then there's this very 80's instrument that plays in it between some lines, that's also very weird. It goes like "DU-NA-NU-NAAHH-NAAA" in quick succession. It's a sharp highish pitched synthetic/electronic sound. It sounded like something from this old game called Road Trip Adventure. It (referring to that one instrument/electronic sound) had a similar soundfont.

There's also a piano sound that's kind of low pitched. Sounded electronic/like a synth, but close to a real piano with the sound being held on to a little longer. I also remember the singer saying "yoouuuu" in a high pitched way.

The song is very energetic and sounds like something you'd hear at a party or disco. It also sounded a little romantic. I heard it in a shop earlier and now it's driving me mad lol. ChatGPT keeps saying it's a 90s Madonna song, but that's not it. It is a very euphoric and nostalgic sounding song even though I've never heard it before. It almost sounds like she's celebrating in the song.

The vibe/emotion/energy it gave is most similar to I Feel For You by Chaka Kahn, especially the later part. It was also fast-ish.

== edit ==

The song MAY have had this weird "get, get get down!" line in it, or something that sounded similar to that (I was talking to someone in the shop so my memory of it is muffled) but I am not 100% certain.

The song wasn't slow and sounded heavenly.

== edit 2 ==

I can't really whistle, but the part of the melody I remember most went like this https://voca.ro/17IhmkCs2oHu there was this piano that sounded a bit synth that made up much of that melody. There was also an electric bass sound. The melody was slightly slower than my whistled version of it. The piano sounded similar to the piano in Head over Heels by Tears for Fears except it sounded like the major version of it if that makes sense?

I'm not from the US. What are the chances that many people that are called "hispanic" are actually part of the acculturated original peoples that have been prived from their past?

I'm depressed and I wanna listen to music... 🥲

Its just fearmongering right?

I don't max the volume, just turn it high enough to hear it, if I used speakers, I'd also turn it so that my ears detect the "same volume" so I don't get why headphones is worse? Literally the same volume.

Also privacy, I don't want others to know what I'm listening, the fuck lol.

I'm thinking ferries that hop from island to island with a 2-4 hour journey time. Do they sleep aboard? Or do they go home after work like the rest of us do?

@nostupidquestions Do you always have either dead pixels, loose charging port, or broken hinge with Acer laptops?

I saw that people are buying $150 or $250 sockbags for their iphone. They also are buying $30 glass cups from Starbucks. Can people accept that the customer is a major part of the problem?

Dunno how else to call it. Got me a job. It's not a bad job. I like the work I do, I tolerate the people there, the hours are not long, it's unionised so they can't harrass me when I'm off the clock, it pays the bills I got.

.... But god damn. Once I'm home I lack the drive to do literally anything.

I've stopped going to gym, I often eat junk cuz I just don't wanna cook, even my hobbies are being left to gather dust. After working my 9-to-5 I just wanna lie down and rot until it's work time again.

So the question is, how do the better-adjusted adults handle this?

Can someone math it up to see the total cost for it.? I am in a starving situation but would volunteer to help. It should not be that hard to give american families at least two meals a day maybe possible three?

Why is the Republican party so content with denying healthcare as a human right, and trying everything they can to harm people who need any sort of assistance? Like.... How do they do it? How much are we talking here when we speak about tax savings for them?

Pretend I am rich? Like how much money am I getting back by Republicans kicking men off healthcare or destroying insurance for those who need it most. It must be alot right?

I mean, every market has 2 or 3 whole aisles dedicated entirely to cleaning products and each seems specific for one thing only. I feel like some soap with a disinfectant is enough, but most people I know do a whole 3 stage cleaning ritual - soap (and rinse), disinfectant (and rinse), bleach (and rinse to finish)

I kinda wanna know about my parents past but I feel awkward asking. They love to interject and add phrases like "look how much worse our lives are and how much we sacrificed for you, you have to be grateful", which just makes me feel bad for asking, but like... I just want the raw story, and that's it.

(Idk when is the right time to ask, but hopefully I manage to get those stories before they die, it'd be a shame to lose that part of history.)
