Bruce Lee was born on this day 80 years ago, give thanks by watching some Bruce! (Or at least someone pretending to be Bruce 😜)

Here are some movies from free streamers. (Availability varies according to country, this is what I can see in Mexico.)

Plex has 唐山大兄 (The Big Boss) (1971) and 精武門 (Fist of Fury) (1972)

Also other stuff, like Golden Harvest's official tribute film:

Tubi has Fist of Fury & plenty of Brucesploitation, and some documentaries (personally, I recommend Cinema of Vengeance, not solely about Bruce)

Fawesome has the Rifftrax version of Fist of Fury (how dare they mock it!) & a little Brucesploitation

Mometu has no real Bruce (except for "The Lost Interview") but loads of Bruceploitation

TheArchive.TV has no genuine Bruce but does have:

Free Movies + has no genuine Bruce but does have:

Flixhouse has the documentary:

Shout Studios on Youtube has:

The Stream on Youtube has some Bruceploitation:

The Wu-Tang Collection on Youtube has a Bruceploitation playlist with over 70 films!

Higher-res 4K version (But unfortunately even more censored, and bloody scenes desaturated to gray)

Split Second is a really weird film, not just because of the unusual mashup of genres, but because it has the bones of a low-budget B-movie, but often feels like a movie with much higher production values.

To give some examples; the dialog is sometimes cheesy in an 80's action movie sorta way, but the actors deliver those lines with way more competence and emotion than you're expecting. The sets aren't made with any exotic materials, but they give off so much atmosphere and character that it gives the impression of a higher budget. The editing sometimes has jarring cuts where it feels like an in-between shot is missing or the continuity is slightly hard to follow, but the rest of the film is so gorgeously lit and framed, that it almost feels like Ridley Scott directed it on an off-day. All of it combined just kinda throws you off what you were expecting it to be.

Rutger Hauer and Alastair Duncan provide some pretty fantastic performances (according to Wikipedia, Hauer was really psyched about the script, which I think comes across in the film), and I think are able to balance the comedic aspects with the bad-assery.

The film was marketed as 'Bladerunner meets Alien', which I get, since stylistically it's pretty bladerunner, but overall I'd say it comes across more like a Carpenter Film, like Escape From New York if it was a monster horror film.

I think the biggest letdown of the movie is certain parts of the soundtrack. Most of it is pretty solid moody 80's synth, but for some action scenes, it'll change to something really budget and cheesy sounding. Apparently those scenes were originally scored by Wendy Carlos, who composed the soundtracks for A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, and Tron, but they ended up removing her tracks and replacing it with the cheesy music. After listening to the other movie soundtracks she did, I can't help but think replacing her tracks were a pretty big L.

Overall it's a pretty damn solid film with good pacing, solid action, and some pretty funny lines. I came away quite pleased to have seen it, and if any of that sounds appealing, I suspect you'll feel the same!

I've seen so many USA! USA! action movies, especially Cold War stuff featuring the Soviets as bad guys, that when I came across the official Mosfilm channel on Youtube (to watch the excellent Иди и смотри {Come & See, 1985} drama about the Nazi invasion in WWII), I thought "Hey, I really should check out what the other side were offering" and added this action movie to my watchlist.

It did not go well...

My log

  • Movie starts. Russian guy pretending to be an American guy speaking English... gets spoken over by a Russian guy speaking Russian, so you have to look at the subtitles to know what the guy speaking English is saying. (But his "American" accent still probably miles better than the "Russian" accents in Hollywood movies.)
  • Then another Russian guy pretending to be an American guy speaking English gets spoken over... by the exact same Russian guy speaking Russian over the other guy! In his dull, matter of fact, uninflected voice. Are we going to hear only one guy's voice for everybody in this whole film???
  • So. Much. Exposition.
  • (And the "American" crew is 100% white so far.)
  • At least they're using Cuba, not Krasnoyarsk, to stand in for Florida.
  • Two new guys talking in English, both being spoken over... by the same (dull) guy. Is this going to be the world's most boring audiobook???
  • If this is how they made movies, they deserved to lose the Cold War.
  • 10 minutes 33 seconds: NOPE! Stop! I will not sit through an hour and a half of just one guy's dull lifeless voice blathering over every character in the movie. Fuck you, Soviet Union. This shit makes me want Rambo to kick your asses!

Is that... a Cyrillic writer's attempt at a sign meant to say "U.S. Property"???

Wild Strawberries is a 1957 Swedish road drama film written and directed by Ingmar Bergman. The original Swedish title is Smultronstället, which literally means "the wild strawberry patch" but idiomatically signifies a hidden gem of a place, often with personal or sentimental value, and not widely known. The cast includes Victor Sjöström in his final screen performance as an old man recalling his past, as well as Bergman regulars Bibi Andersson, Ingrid Thulin, and Gunnar Björnstrand. Max von Sydow and Gunnel Lindblom also appear in small roles.

Dial M for Murder is a 1954 American crime thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starring Ray Milland, Grace Kelly, Robert Cummings, Anthony Dawson, and John Williams.

Originally intended to be shown in dual-strip polarized 3-D, the film played in most cinemas in ordinary 2-D owing to the loss of interest in the 3-D process (the projection of which was difficult and error-prone) by the time of its release.

It's time to tease your hair, clip on an earring, don a leather jacket and get ready to watch the classic 80s vampire film "The Lost Boys"!!?!

I couldn't find any other copies in English, but here are some copies in other languages

comedy horror film ... follows two teenaged brothers who move with their divorced mother to the fictional town of Santa Carla, California, only to discover that the town is a haven for vampires.

...

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 75% based on 80 reviews, with an average rating of 6.4/10. The website's critics consensus reads, "Flawed but eminently watchable, Joel Schumacher's teen vampire thriller blends horror, humor, and plenty of visual style with standout performances from a cast full of young 1980s stars."[11] On Metacritic, it has a weighted average score of 63 out of 100 based on 16 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[12] Audiences surveyed by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A−" on an A+ to F scale.[13]

Roger Ebert gave the film two-and-a-half out of four stars, praising the cinematography and "a cast that's good right down the line", but ultimately describing Lost Boys as a triumph of style over substance and "an ambitious entertainment that starts out well, but ends up selling its soul."[14] Caryn James of The New York Times called Dianne Wiest's character a "dopey mom" and Barnard Hughes's character "a caricature of a feisty old Grandpa." She found the film more of a comedy than a horror and the finale "funny".[15]

Elaine Showalter commented that "the film brilliantly portrays vampirism as a metaphor for the kind of mythic male bonding that resists growing up, commitment, especially marriage."[16] Variety panned the film, calling it "a horrifically dreadful vampire teensploitation entry that daringly advances the theory that all those missing children pictured on garbage bags and milk cartons are actually the victims of bloodsucking bikers."[17]

The film won a Saturn Award for Best Horror Film at the 15th Saturn Awards in 1987.[18]

Cultural influence
The Lost Boys has been credited with helping shift depictions of vampires in popular culture and bringing a more youthful, sexier appeal to the vampire genre.

ANOTHER campy yet ultimately enertaining movie that was subjected to a Monsterdon watchy party .

an industrialist's orphaned grandchildren and their collie befriend an awakened Yeti.

...

While RKO and Universal Pictures battled over King Kong's rights, Dino De Laurentiis—the producer of the 1976 King Kong remake—announced another giant monster film which would be filmed in the Himalayas, entitled Yeti. Although his version ended up not being made, this film was a low-budget cash in on De Laurentiis' project, which aimed to beat it to theaters....

In a contemporary review, Maurizio Porro of the Corriere della sera was most negative, writing that "[t]he film was shot on such a low budget (the rudimentary effects are accomplished through obvious image superimpositions) that in comparison, the Taviani brothers look like Cecil B. DeMille. But it is not the only issue: [...] the story and screenplay are completely missing. Mystery and suspense are absent, whereas ridiculousness is in full effect, dominating the proceedings."
