Be My Eyes is an app that connects people who are blind or have low vision with a sighted volunteer to provide assistance. This can involve helping to locate an item or providing feedback on an outfit. The app now has a new feature that leverages AI to provide a similar level of feedback. I am a volunteer on this app and had a positive experience helping someone find the Post Office in a shopping complex. I recommend checking it out.

Check out the recordings of the ArXiv Forum. A lot of great ideas about how to make STEM research papers accessible were shared. Also, researchers, professors, and doctoral students shared their experiences of having to find workarounds to access inaccessible STEM articles. The ArXiv is a repository of STEM research articles. The platform strives to provide an accessible experience for a wide range of users.

One of the reasons I left Reddit and jumped to Lemmy is because Reddit doesn’t care about accessibility. This post should serve as motivation for Lemmy and the Fediverse to do better. How can we make the experience accessible to a wide range of users?

I know the Fediverse has limited resources but focusing on key issues could go a long way to creating a more inclusive experience. I’m curious what actionable steps can be taken to improve the platform.

Also, what Fediverse apps are building in accessible features?

The vast majority of websites have accessibility barriers. The WebAIM study explored the most popular websites to find the most common accessibility barriers. If you want to learn more about how to test websites and create accessible web content I recommend The Department Of Homeland Security’s Trusted Tester Course. It is completely free!

Apple is making a lot of strides towards promoting digital accessibility. I hope other companies follow suit. There seem to be a lot of new opportunities to use AR to create new accessibility features. I just thought I’d share in case anyone is interested.

I thought I'd share this post to kick off the community. I think it is awesome the work Microsoft is doing to develop accessible products like the Xbox adaptive controller. Their latest work is making the racing experience in Forza accessible for people with vision loss.
