I figured some teleco geniuses out here, so I figured I might give it a shot.

The house I grew up in is looking to get rid of it's landline, and thus it's phone number. This phone number is one of the small number I actually have memorized-making it super useful, because I am unlikely to memorize any additional numbers in my lifetime, and certainly no numbers will ever have the same nostalgic ring to them.

They're a different phone carrier, and a different state. The current owner would be happy to hand the number over. Is this type of transfer in the realm of possibility?

Kevin Mitnick was a name that I heard many times before, but I was never really familiar with the person. I just knew about the "getting in trouble for computer stuff" and of course the "Free Kevin" movement.

The 90s were a time of discovery for me and computers. It was also a time of me almost constantly getting in trouble for what I was able to do with computers (and networks). It took a threat of being reported to the FBI for me to finally take a break from screwing around so much.

My friends and I use to buy 2600 magazines and go to the local meetups. There was even a time after one of the meetups when a bunch of us rented a U-Haul truck to use to actually go trashing at some local businesses. (Also, I was so excited when some of my work eventually made it into an issue of 2600. I wish I still knew some of the people I use to hang out, because I would definitely brag about it to them.)

And of course, my friends an I got a huge kick out of the Hackers movie when it came out. It may have been insanely silly, but it also made the nerdy stuff seem shiny and attractive.

Basically, the "hacker culture" was part of my adolescence and helped shape who I am, and a lot of that was influenced by people like Kevin Mitnick and the kind of stuff he did.

RIP Kevin.

Red box (lemmy.world)
submitted 1 year ago by BenDoubleU@lemmy.world to c/2600@lemmy.world

Read an article about building a Redbox either on the 2600 Usenet group or some other hack/phreak BBS probably around 1993. Went to radio shack the next day to buy the tone dialer and crystal. I messed up the solder pretty bad but it still works to this day.

How to join Lemmy (lemmy.world)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by denzuko@lemmy.world to c/2600@lemmy.world

In this howto we'll show you how one can join lemmy.world or any Fedirated lemmy instance so they can free themselves from the evils of reddit's CEO:

  1. Go to https://join-lemmy.org

  2. Click Join a Server

  3. Pick one you like the domain / url for and click it

  4. Sign up with your email of choice. use a +2600@<email.host> to help find notifications later on.

Congrats, you have joined lemmy. From your home instances, you can click on the Communities link and see all the communities on that instance, and subscribe to them so they show up on your subbed feed. If you don’t see a community you want, you can create one. In the most basic form, that’s it, you are now part of Lemmy.

From here You can log into your instance and then subscribe to communities from other instances. To do that, once you log in to your preferred instance:

  • Search for !community-name@instance-name (like !risa@startrek.website)
  • Click the link on the search result
  • Expand the sidebar
  • Click subscribe

Now, whenever you log in to your preferred instance you will see posts from the sub in your feed.

Have fun!

With all things in history there is usually a person of power whom abuses that power. In this case the CEO of reddit has taken a dump on its user base, and yes that is mildly an option but one shared by the over 38% of subreddits out there still dark at this time of writing.

This blackout while decisive and impactful. It was not a success and seeing the voting records on [/r/2600/(https://www.reddit.com/r/2600/comments/14an6wx/user_poll_go_federated_stay_dark_or_open_up/) to open back up] shows how decisive this issue is overall.

The numbers do not lie but it is quite clear there is bias behind the data. However because I am not a dictator only a supporter of 2600 Enterprises and the community of hackers here. One does recognize there is a desire to hold a presence within the Fediverse and open up the subreddit. With that we have our community here at lemmy.world/2600 and are looking into ways to mirror the r/2600 content via a bot and do encourage or members to use their favorite lemmy instance, matrix.io bridge, or fediverse client to continue the community have built up over the years over here as well. Secure in the knowledge that your voice is heard, the community is advert free, and you are respected as an individual.

Welcome to the Fediverse, Hackers!
