i read in Calibian and the Witch, that in the 1500s the state had to create public assistance programs for the poor, which really was the first acknowledgement that capitalism was an unsustainable economy. which is also to say that capitalism would kill us all without the state doing the bare minimum to "protect" the citizens (or keeping the citizens barely alive so that the capitalist class can keep exploiting us), and therefore also the reason why capitalism keeps going.
I don't know if it's quite right for the topic, but I've been looking at getting Braiding Sweetgrass for a while. Imma just leave that here
