In many Asian families, red envelopes (hongbao) are given during Lunar New Year, weddings, and births. They carry more than money, they carry meaning, tradition, and memory.

When my son was born in 2021, his grandmother gave him red envelopes filled with cash. Around the same time, a friend handed me a plain white envelope with a QR code, an Ethereum address full of random tokens. That contrast sparked an idea: what if Bitcoin could be gifted in a way that was tangible, cultural, and memorable like a hongbao?

I created a Bitcoin paper wallet for my son. Each year I added a small amount, something he could one day understand and move to his own wallet. From that experiment, Hongbao Bitcoin was born.

After months of design work, setbacks including losing an entire shipment of envelopes to customs, and redesigns, we have finally reached a milestone: the envelopes are now shipping.

The concept is simple:

Personalized with custom visual styles and portraits

Designed as gifts that feel cultural, not transactional

We see Hongbao Bitcoin as a bridge, a way to introduce Bitcoin through something familiar and heartfelt.
