Been thinking about this after someone posted a video to this community for the first time

Post only images. No gifs, videos or articles.

This is one of the rules stickied to the top of the community. But it's only there because at the time of creating traditional_art I looked to r/art for guideline inspiration and took it from there without further thought.

It only makes sense to have rules that are voted on by the rest of the community. So what do you guys think? Should users be able to post videos? (and gifs and articles to that extent about art instead of merely being restricted to images?)

I’d rather that video not be a part of this sub. I’d like to not deal with youtube and it’s ad-driven ecosphere. My preference is to cleanly see an image and appreciate that. In my opinion, “traditional” art is not video-based. Others may disagree, but I just wanted to state my thoughts.

Edit: I also want to add that while I don't particularly care to see video-based art here, I am not so inflexible as to never allow some sort of exceptions in my thinking. Having separate subs for video art (or other art) means smaller and smaller communities as we seek accommodations for all our interests. Instead, perhaps we can have one day of the week where video or other arguably legitimate "traditional" art are seen or discussed (documentaries, etc). In this way we can embrace the art (or discussions about art) that does not fall within the boundaries already set here.

I think it is important to be inclusive with a topic such as this as everyone's conception of "traditional" art can be as different as the art itself.

I think video art and art commentary is great, but lumping it all in here would make this place less interesting to me. I'm also not sure anyone looking for video art would think to look here for it. Maybe having periodic threads to post commentary or non-image art could be a good compromise?

I acknowledge that's somewhat arbitrary, but I don't think we can ever eliminate that entirely where art is concerned.

I think that videos should be allowed.

First of all there is traditional animation, which has been being made for over 100 years and i would very much consider to be traditional art.

Second, I feel that videos are an important aspect of speaking about art, whether it is in the form of documentary, or a time lapse of painting a work.

In a subreddit like r/art where moderation requirements have to be very strict, it makes sense to only allow images, but in a small community like this, i feel like there's room to allow a broader range of content related to traditional art, so long as it's moderated correctly.

Art documentaries are great. So are installations. I personally prefer me a good, traditional painting or similar, but accept that art expands into other mediums, and discussing/ documentary is also valuable.

It would be cool if they could stay embedded or like.. playable on Lemmy without going to an external

FWIW, I came here wondering if I could post an article.

Film is definitely a traditional medium in terms of the rules on the sidebar, so I don't see why it wouldn't be allowed.

Articles are different. That's an entirely separate discussion imo. Do you want to include news and discussions about art topics or just posts about specific pieces?
