Looking to move some drives from my gaming rig to my server but it lacks hot swappable bays. I have seen a few nice cases but they dont check all the boxes. Anyone have a good recommendation based on...

  1. 12+ hot swappable drive bays
  2. Fit full size graphics cards
  3. ATX full size
  4. Rack mountable
  5. Includes rails is a plus but optional

Silverstone has some interesting cases like RM61-312 and RM43-324-RS, but wtf are these prices....

Without checking, I'm willing to wager that inter-tech has something for you. I'm using a 4U case from them to rack mount ATX hardware.

Why'd you have to go sharing that with us? Now I know what's going to happen with my money...

Your best bet for a large storage server is going to be the Rosewill 4U cases or biting the noise/power bullet and getting a high disk density rack server like a Dell 740XD. Either route will cost about the same hardware wise. Are you moving a RAID/HBA card over or doing JBOD? if RAID/HBA keep in mind how you plan to cool the card

In case someone stumbles on this post and is interested in the build, so they know what works

  • Intel I-7 8700 with a Random Cooler (Be aware of height clearance for coolers)
  • 32gb ram
  • MSI Z730M motherboard
  • 32gb ram
  • Rosewill RSV-L4500U
  • Dell H730 RAID Controller
  • Adaptec 2283400-R AEC 82885T SAS Expander
  • 650w PSU with three SATA power cables, each cable has a breakout cable powering 2-3 drives. I would highly recommend a PSU with four sata power cables if possible, but I also believe the RSV has some weird clearance restrictions with PSU length
  • Intel X520-DA2 10gb SFP Network Card

The Dell H730 has the ability to enable HBA mode in the settings menu so no flashing is needed, and the card works flawlessly (so far) with the Adaptec. This config also restricts you from using a GPU and the Expander needs powered via molex. I’m also happy to answer any questions about the build

I’m running my trusty old Antec 900 with three Rosewill hotswap bays to hold 12 3.5” drives.

I’ve got this laying on its side currently, and I need to replace the failed top exhaust fan, but I’m sure you could come up with a rack mount option to throw it in a rack. Probably about 4u tall on its side.

Good lord, I have TWO of those that used to be gaming rigs.

Just waiting till I can afford a low power motherboard so I can use all the drives I have sitting around.

At one time one of them had ten drives in it... Talk about heavy!

You can find plenty of Supermicro chassis on ebay

I don't think there is a shortage of cheap rackmount ATX cases. Any 3U case or larger should fit a full size GPU, though if you need a power cable coming out the long edge you might need 4U.
