The short answer is: letting 1.4 million visitors a year touch the stones would destroy them. But the long answer is still fascinating. With Stonehenge's curator, I get to go inside the circle.

The moss thing was shocking.

Tom's final words, about how far future archaeologists might interpret today's treatment of Stonehenge, gave me literal chills. Really wonderful to think of.
