Playing around with Catodon and really enjoying it. I just thought it was really interesting to note that emoji reactions do federate. Although for some reason Piefed shows 2 when there's only 1.

For those unfamiliar "'keys" are the many Misskey forks. i.e. Catodon, Iceshrimp, Sharkey, etc.

I just responded to this post with an emojo reaction from Misskey (https://misskey.io/notes/at1btgq0wg2c0002) and I don't see it on this side.

@wakest@piefed.social @artyom@piefed.social I left a emojo reaction from catodon now.

It just says :catodon: for me

I assume any non-standard emojis will be instance-specific. :catodon: is all the server receives, and then matches it with a known local emoji image. If one doesn't exist, you just get text. It seems the :neocat_glasses: is loaded onto piefed.social

@artyom@piefed.social @Lojcs@piefed.social that's probably because piefed doesn't support custom emoji (or at least custom emoji that are compatible with misskey and akkoma, like we do).

Yes this is pretty rocky in PieFed. Since making an initial implementation of emoji reactions I haven't come back for another pass to clean it up based on the bugs that have shown up in production.

PieFed makes a daily request to /api/v3/site on each Lemmy instance, to get a list of admins and emoji. I've just checked and found that catodon.rocks has the same endpoint so that looks like something to try.

Interesting, must be Catodon-specific then!

Misskey's emote system is the most insane (non-derogatory) thing I've ever seen, I would be shocked if anything federated properly.

Both of the reactions are user with one and the same name, Dylan, which is apparently @Dylan@catodon.rocks . So, looks like it's a bug and not something that would have to do with one instance being federated with another while a second instance is not.

To help @wjs018@piefed.wjs018.xyz with debugging, here's a link to the comment in question: https://piefed.social/post/2552116#comment_13537279

I can confirm that not all Fediverse software is conformant to the whole of the ActivityPub specs. Interop is definitely not bug-free.

Very cool to see!

@artyom@piefed.social the first thing that came to my mind for the inconsistency is that other platforms give an upvote automatically to new topics, from the author, but in catodon we don't do that, each topic starts with no score and self upvotes are not allowed.

But if piefed genuinely shows the same reaction from you twice, it might be worth looking into. If you provide more info I can take a look, thanks!

Hi friend. I wasn't looking to file an issue. Quite the opposite really. I'm not a developer but if there's anything I can do to help, I'd be happy to. What kind of info are you looking for? Might want to get with Rimu if you're looking to debug and improve federation.

Piefed definitely treats emoji reactions as an upvote as well.

[–] panos@catodon.rocks 2 points 5 days ago

@artyom@piefed.social yes, I had talked to Rimu (who's really cool) when I was making the implementation, to make sure we do the same. I'm just saying, if you see two reactions where there should be one, let me know so I can look at it. In general, if you see anything that looks like a bug, send me a dm or mention me (or find me on our matrix room or file an issue on our repo!) so that I can see it and fix it :psi_hearts:
