Additionally, this road got lucky. We don't see all the ones which fell apart over 4000 years.
Sounds like a fun experiment, would be cool to recreate a roman road and see
I'd rather see the opposite - a modern road construction without modern usage after 2000 years
There is a rail trail near my house that seams to be similarly constructed to a road.
It hasn't held up well, requires continuous maintenance and additional asphalt.
I have a theory that modern road technology isn't the best, it's the most short term profitable. Designed to wear down and require maintenance and new purchases.
Ive read the roman roads were built to never send aaintenance crew to. What exactly that means, I have no idea

I don’t think the Romans existed 4000 years ago. More like 2000 years ago.
All you nits saying roman roads would be destroyed in a day by today’s cars and I’m here in Italy watching trucks drive over similar roads with just newer tech. Cobblestone roads are a thing.
They need to be maintained though, just as any other roads. Cobbles also move when something drives over them and in time it adds up.

Admittedly the romans weren't driving thousands of multi-ton vehicles over them at high speeds
4th power of axle weight. A truck is going to do thousands of times the damage of the heaviest cart.
