US chicken companies pioneered restricting sleep to keep birds eating around the clock.

A new study (Li et al., 2026) recommends giving chickens just 2 hours of darkness nightly to maximize the time they spend eating. The study and photo are Chinese.

We know chickens have far better hapiness with 7–8 hours of darkness to sleep.

But they eat more and grow faster when they are sleep deprived.

This is beyond fucked up...I cant stand what we do to animals.

Reports like these are the reason I couldn't stand eating meat anymore. Went vegetarian first but learned soon that vegetarism is just meat eating with extra steps. Everything thats for vegetarians but not vegan contributes to the same suffering as meating meat.

It's all worth it even with all the shit I get to eat from other guys for being a vegan man.

Get a vegan cookbook, vegan suppliments and be part of the change.

Another post comes out highlighting yet one more of the enumerable ways we humans absolutely ruin the lives of other animals. Like clockwork, the few people who actually take the simple, reasonable steps to approach a better way of life get dogpiled by all the others who have their bag of holding ready with every stale excuse and outright lies about veganism to continue the status quo.

We are in a thread about one form of cruelty towards chickens - only one small part of an entire supply chain of fucked up that is going on right now more than ever - which would probably lead to a whole multiple weeks of news and outrage and lawsuits if it was done to humans.

And you decided that your goal was going to be to come in here and automatically decenter the conversation away from the animals because you wanted to argue with vegans?

Listen, whatever your self identity is, if you are doing what you can to stop supporting these things, that's awesome I'm proud of you. I do not care about identity politics, especially when it gets into the No True Scottsman obnoxiousness. If you are doing what you can, with what you have, that is good enough for now. And I hope you're able to feel inspired to push things further.

But if your whole thing is to just come into these posts to argue with vegans, first of all, get a real job. Second, look, I don't care to frame things around whether someone is good or bad. We all just do things, and there are consequences for those things for better or worse. This isn't about vegans, this is about literally every species of animal on the planet, both including and excluding us.

Every time we pay for an animal product, we are complicit in all the things being done to both humans and other animals to get that product. That is the cold hard reality. That is never going to go away unless we all collectively change.

But if your whole thing is to just come into these posts to argue with vegans

fairly certain that this post has nothing to do with vegans and everything to do with chickens.

I don't come here to argue with vegans. Vegans come to these posts of their own volition. If anything I'm a huge supporter of free-range vegans that feel it necessary, nay, compelled to argue of their own accord.

I'm just here as an innocent bystander, eating my tendies and being unfairly judged by vegans through their smug sense of moral superiority. no different than the christofascists that tell nonbelievers that they will burn in hell for all eternity for not accepting jesus christ as lord.

ironically, vegans have another thing in common with christofascists. Having a victim simplex so powerful they tend to make the actual problem about themselves. here's a post about mistreatment of chickens, and yet many users like yourself have made it about how poorly people treat vegans.

shame on you!

Ok a surface-level duckduckgo of "Li et al 2026" only gives me twitter that's related (which's also an unlinked image)

I seen similar claims that DO actually have sources before, so I know this type of stuff happens in the meat industry, but still please link the sources.

I wasn't able to find the article on Google Scholar or Kagi either. Given that "Li" is the second most common surname in the world, it would be nice to have a bit more for a reference.

Before deciding to not eat meat just because assuming that every farm is the same, they're not. Some are very nice: https://youtube.com/shorts/mMNt2p6q1Rk?is=je575dm84zgaSCLu

You can do what you want to do but there is no "nice" or "humane" way to exploit and kill animals.

Not letting people sleep 8 hours naturally does the same thing.

[–] willeypete23@reddthat.com 1 points 5 days ago

I'm not sure where this 6 to 7 hours for sleep figure comes from. And I'm not saying that to push any agenda. I have birbs for pets and I'm actually rather specifically interested in avian biology. As far as I'm aware birds don't sleep in standard sleep cycles like mammalian animals. They sleep in small bursts that last only a few minutes but they do it hundreds of times a day.
