I remember opera having a text only mode back in the day.

Wow, someone else who still does this! 15KB PNG images, in 2026!
TL;DR they configured uBlock to block almost everything, which breaks most websites, then only allowed the bare minimum to get things working again
i usually optimize images i post. mostly with the help of RIOT, a program and plugin i've been using for nearly two decades (yea, even on linux). i keep an old, supporting irfanview specifically for it.
and i always optimize images used on sites i work on that aren't intended to be high-res (like full-size or detailed photographs). high speed internet was slow to get widely available here, and it's still not everywhere. the 'weight' of a web page view does matter.
i also use browsers the same way. block by default, whitelist known trusted sources only for sites i frequent. and temp accept everything else, but only that which is required to load a page i actually 'need' to read. if it's "too much", i'll just take the known page title and run it through duck and find an alternative source.. if i care to bother at all at that point.
there's a very small number of sites for which i use a wholly-dedicated browser for, or at least a separate profile for. they're custom configured, including addons, specifically for whatever task or site it's for.
I did this for awhile but it's so much work. Some websites, like my bank, keep moving the goalpost and I get tired of fixing it and just open a different profile.
I have it medium hardened (blue numbers) and my bank works with nothing extra allowed! I hate them for everything else but that's cool.
