1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry of any kind will not be tolerated. This is an LGBTQ+-friendly community -- if that is a problem for you, you should leave.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • Don't come looking for advice, this is not the right community.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves / tolerates / hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.

Damn this was the wrong Linus home theater setup video

Obviously the theater is filling up to watch the cult classic comedy/tragedy Year of the Linux Desktop

Sidebar what was up with that whole Richard stallman it's okay to be attracted to children situation? I totally forgot about it until this very moment.

    [–] Neptr@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

He apologized IIRC. He has many other toxic beliefs, a quick web search will show that. It is good that he is no longer part of the greater linux community.

    [–] diaphragmwp@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 10 hours ago

Yeah, he did his thing once and he is remembered for that but nobody really cares about most of his opinions anymore.

If we were to believe this piece of the OpenBSD lyrics explanation page isn't satire:

In 1998 when a United Airlines plane was waiting in the queue at Washington Dulles International Airport for take-off to New Orleans (where a Usenix conference was taking place), one man stood up from his seat, demanded that they stop waiting in the queue and be permitted to deplane. Even after orders from the crew and a pilot from the cockpit he refused to sit down. The plane exited the queue and returned to the airport gangway. Security personnel ran onto the plane and removed this man, Richard Stallman, from the plane. After Richard was removed from the plane, everyone else stayed onboard and continued their journey to New Orleans. A few OpenBSD developers were on that same plane, seated very close by, so we have an accurate story of the events.

Apologizing because he changed his views or apologizing because of the backlash?

    The former, as I recall.

Richard Stallman, he invented the GNU Projects stuff you might femilar in Linux like dd mv cp gcc cat GPL make bash...

    [–] db2@lemmy.world -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

    He's also a pedophile.

The Daily Beast first reported that Stallman wrote in 2003, "I think that everyone age 14 or above ought to take part in sex, though not indiscriminately. (Some people are ready earlier.)" In 2006, he wrote, "I am skeptical of the claim that voluntarily [sic] pedophilia harms children. The arguments that it causes harm seem to be based on cases which aren't voluntary, which are then stretched by parents who are horrified by the idea that their little baby is maturing."

Plenty countries place the age of consent at 15 years.

I get why you consider this pedophilia, but it's a bit iffy in my book. 14 years old is just one year younger than what many countries do not consider pedophilia.

Indeed we all agree that raping an adolescent will most likely mark them for life.

On the voluntary side it is a bit different to evaluate. I definitely do not think everyone over 14 should immediately take part in sex.

However I see nothing wrong with a 14 years old having sex with someone their age. On the other hand, having sex with someone older is not something I'd always condemn, but I would do that in many occasions. That is why in most cases the laws regarding age of consent strongly defend the minor.

The "half your age plus seven" social rule would imply that a 14 year old can engage with another 14 year old, and only that.

I feel that this rule would work better than the hard age limit that the world's legal systems have adopted, where the age delta isn't factored in.

My son is 15, and I told him it's half your age plus seven.

    [–] ranzispa@mander.xyz 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

I'm confused by this social rule, never heard of it but doesn't really make too much sense when applied to a couple number.

    10 -> 12 16 -> 15 20 -> 17 30 -> 22 50 -> 32

It only appears to work on the 14 years old case.

    [–] pHr34kY@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

It starts at 14 because when you're 13 or less, there is no overlap at all. i.e. a (12/2)+7=13, but (13/2)+7=13.5, so they can't match. A 13 year old can't go as low as 12.

    [–] db2@lemmy.world 2 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

"With someone their age" is key. Why would an old man who wrote software be commenting publicly on kids exploring sex? There's no valid reason.

    [–] ranzispa@mander.xyz 2 points 23 hours ago

Such decisions are taken by adults, not by minors. Adults discuss their opinions and work out what is the consensus on a certain topic. Then adults get together and organize to change laws in such a way as to reflect that consensus.

"With someone their age" is key.

No, I wrote quite a few more things in my reply.
