I just experienced this the entire week. Boyfriend's family plans nothing. not. a. thing. It's like pulling teeth just getting information on how I should prepare, because they literally don't even think about it.

Yikes, sounds like a nightmare. I don’t need a lot of planning, just a general idea of the plans for the day. Like if we’re near the ocean, is it a hang around and go to the beach day or is it a museum/tour and mini golf kind of day?

Agreed! If nothing else to make sure I at least dress appropriately.

Days 0-4: decision paralysis

Days 5-7: frenetic scramble attempting to do all the stuff I should've done for fun, coupled with all of the chores I have to do normally on the weekend because I'm physically and mentally exhausted from masking all week at work.

Who the hell goes on vacation without a schedule? How is anyone supposed to relax unless they have every day planned down to the minute?

Who the hell goes on vacation ~~without a schedule~~? How is anyone supposed to relax ~~unless they have every day planned down to the minute~~?

And people wonder why I'm a hollowed out husk before 50.

People who are constantly told their affinity for predicability and structure is the source of their stress and the need to try being more flexible and open 😬

Nothing makes me feel more relaxed than knowing exactly what’s going to happen next.

Yeah, me too. I have only recently come to understand that most common advice is useless at best, harmful at worst.

Some helpful advice: advice is highly personal. What might help another person might be useless to you, and what might be perfect for you might be useless to another.

Seek advice from someone who understands you, and when someone who doesn’t understand you offers useless advice, don’t take it personally. Understand that they love you and leave it at that. what’s important is that they were trying to help.

Untangle the mess later, because as you age, you find that true friends are both rare and special. Worth overlooking a few faults, especially as you realize a few of your own faults that you hope/are grateful that they also overlook.

After being unemployed for 1.5 years (on purpose, I am privileged enough and accepting that) I can confidently say that the ideal lifestyle is one of very light and relaxed goals that keep you motivated and mentally/physically challenging, while being chill enough to give you all the room you need to be a good old monkey that likea to be lazy in a comfy bed and eat tasty food.

We are not built to be efficient and productive, but we are also not built to do nothing, we are built to be just challenged enough to be stimulated and to develop, while having the time to be relaxed and spontaneous.

The balance is individualistic, but I hope that one day our society will aim for that balance as both an individual and a societal goal.
