Welcome to /c/birding, a community for people who like birds, birdwatching and birding in general! Feel free to post your birding photos or just photos of birds you found in general, but please follow the rules as outlined below.

  1. This should go without saying, but please be nice to one another. No petty insults, no bigotry, no harassment, hate speech, nothing of that sort! Depending on the severity, you'll either only get your comment removed and a warning or your comment will be removed and you will be banned from /c/birding.

  2. This is a community for posting content of birds, nothing else. Please keep the posts related to birding or birds in general.

  3. When posting photos or videos that you did not take, please always credit the original photographer! Link to the original post on social media as well, if there is one.

  4. Absolutely no AI-generated content is allowed! I know it has become quite difficult to tell whether or not something is AI-generated or not, but please make sure that whatever you post is not AI-generated. If it is, your post will be removed. If you continously post AI-generated content, you'll be banned from /c/birding (but it's obviously okay if you post AI-generated stuff once or twice without knowing you did so).

  5. Please provide rough information location, if possible. This is a more loosely-enforced rule, especially because it is sometimes not possible to provide a location. But if you post a photo you took yourself, please provide a rough location and date of the sighting.

Every European (and I guess non-Europeans as well) can vote what our next Euro design will be: https://surveys.ecb.europa.eu/10b/neweuro/

About ten different designs are available and about half of them feature birds instead of boring people.

I really like the bird designs as they symbolise freedom without borders. Hope one of them gets chosen in the end.

It’s weird how they want faces now when the bridges on the current notes are specifically chosen to be fantasy bridges so they are nationally ambiguous. Also don’t see why Maria Callas deserves a spot as if she had such an important impact on European history. It’s like putting DJ Tiësto on the notes in 50 years.

I don't think any person deserves to be on the bills. The birds absolutely do !

I wish they weren't systematically paired with horrifyingly bad architecture on the reverse, but I'll take what I can get...

[–] kevinsky@feddit.nl 5 points 11 hours ago

I like the birds, never been a fan of the faces on the bills.

[–] GarboDog@lemmy.world 3 points 16 hours ago

We like the birds ones but the buildings on the back felt weird, so were leaning towards the ones with people and cultures

[–] synapse1278@lemmy.world 5 points 18 hours ago

I love design D with the recording and spectrograph of the bird calls as anti-copy measures.

[–] nuko147@lemmy.world 5 points 18 hours ago

I wish they had different animals. Like birds for the 5€ (light), bears for the 200€ (heavy), and different animals in between.

And for the back famous art paintings.

[–] TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 18 hours ago

I love how many of these designs are clearly influenced by the old Dutch Guilders bank note designs. See this for a documentary about it on YouTube.

Most of them are ugly as fuck

[–] TheEighthDoctor@lemmy.zip 3 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

These ones are fire, but its a bit weird to have an American born woman in the euro notes.

[–] yogurtwrong@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Somebody should make a similar one with a tilting window

[–] kamen@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Does anyone find tilting windows annoying?

[–] diaphragmwp@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 16 hours ago (1 children)
[–] kamen@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago

No, I meant that from a different angle - both things have their purpose, but attached bottle caps is something that almost anyone you ask would find annoying.

Initially this was (I guess) more like some typical European things that are not common at all outside of Europe.

I much prefer the birds over the people =w=

I mean, most of the people on there have 0 relevancy to my country, and I imagine it's not an uncommon sentiment elsewhere. Birds at least don't exclude a bunch of countries

I also quite like the vertical/portrait orientation designs in there, I think it would be a cool change

[–] kolmaskommentoija@sopuli.xyz 3 points 10 hours ago

Honestly, I have not seen or heard anyone say, they would like the people on the notes. Those have to exist somewhere, since the people are even a suggestion - but if the design chosen is people, I will 100% believe someone high up specifically decided on it, over what was actually favored.

[–] DupaCycki@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago

Same. I hate people

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 2 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

I assume these are in the same order for everyone, but I loved the first set of vertical ones; the ones with might contrast. Most of the designs felt afraid to use color, since the note is supposed to be one color to identify them easily. I honestly think having the high contrast with the birds makes them easier to identify though. 90% of it was still the right color, so that's still easy to see. Having the image stand out just gives it another identifiable piece though, which can't hurt, and it makes them look so much prettier.

I believe they're under the same letters for everyone. I'll include the pictures just in case :3

For me "D"

Is my favourite overall, I love the bright colours on it, though I think the 20 maybe is a bit crowded, with the multiple birds and the security strip it all kinda clashes and you lose the shapes in the middle imo

The other vertical ones with birds ("I" and "J") are my 2 runner ups, (I just think the vertical designs are cool :3), "J"

I think has better colours than "I", and I like that the colouration of the birds is somewhat preserved in the accents on them both. "I"

Overall looks the most rustic/traditional, while "D" the most modern I think.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 1 points 17 hours ago

Yeah, they're all good! For me, I is my favorite. J is a close second. I like that the birds all inhabit approximately the same location on J though, all entering that circle. It's a nice touch. D I feel is too plain, but it may be slightly better functionally. It definitely looks more like currency. I is the most artistic and interesting I think.

I tell you 100% of those people have 0 relevancy to my and many other EU countries

[–] hugig@lemmy.ml 0 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Saying people like Marie Curie have no relevancy to your country just because they are not from your country is a wild statement. Maybe also the reason for why the idea of "Europeans" as a people is not working out yet.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 1 points 8 hours ago

Now do US South and North.

Birds > people

Putting actual people on banknotes... Have we learned nothing from metoo? WTF?!

Eels said it best: "I like birds"

Im not even that big on birds but the bird designs are so much better than the people ones and also in general i dont think people on banknotes are that good of an idea. Birds on the other hand are something we can all relate to and should think about more cause many species are in danger.

If Canada joins the EU, the noble Turkey can appear on the $1 euro note.

[–] lyralycan@sh.itjust.works 19 points 1 day ago (3 children)

And most of the bird designs had buildings 😢

[–] bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de 26 points 1 day ago

Of course, the birds need toilets!

[–] rustydrd@sh.itjust.works 14 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Not most of them, all had buildings, and it's always the same buildings, too. The buildings are those of the seven official institutions of the EU.

  • 5€: European Parliament
  • 10€: European Commission
  • 20€: European Central Bank
  • 50€: European Court of Justice
  • 100€: European Council and Council of the EU (shared building)
  • 200€: European Court of Auditors

Personally, once I figured that out (and it took me a minute), I much preferred the buildings to the seemingly random scenes on the backs of designs with the famous people. One of the designs also shows the names of the institutions (and birds), which I particularly liked.
