The US state department has launched a plan to “disable” and “dismantle” the International Criminal Court (ICC), which includes pressuring other countries to join in and threatening to cut US assistance for those that don’t.

If genocidal countries threatening to absolve themselves of crimes doesn't show other countries there's even more need for ICC then i don't know what will.

Dismantling the systems of accountability seems to be a theme with Trump and his kind.

This was a long time coming. The US has been heavily against the ICC since before it was even created. It was one of the few countries that voted against its establishment, and right away pressured its 'allies' to ignore the ICC's rulings and arrest warrants.

Uh oh! Not the International Colonial Court, must be time for the broken clock to be right again.

It is definitely true but the UN and it's enrity should be reformed not dismentled

[–] ReptilianCleric@lemmy.zip 23 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Um, you do realize this is not because he had a problem with them investigating daddy Putin's war crimes??

The jackass just doesn't want his own crimes discussed publicly, and that makes him "right"?

Fuck sake you ml types are fucking predictable. Fucking ridiculous...

When was americans presidents hold accountable for any crimes? Most of them should have rot in jail for their rest of their lives

[–] ReptilianCleric@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

No argument there

That's...why I said broken clock

doesn't make the ICC any less of a neocolonialism arm that needs too be disbanded, just like USAID

Fuck sake you ml types

I don't understand this, wym?

[–] blartcap_@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 1 day ago

Of all the possible comparisons you could have made to show neocolonialism is bad, you chose the one that saves millions of lives a year.

This is like FOX News trying to show how socialism is bad by listing all the good things it does.

[–] mrdown@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago

Russia is also colonial and benefits from the UN

[–] ReptilianCleric@lemmy.zip 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh, right, cause the literally thousands that have died from the canceling of USAID is progress.

Just, what the fuck ever dude.

[–] shani66@ani.social 9 points 1 day ago

Remember it's better for America to be slightly less predominant than it is for thousands of people to not die!

I'm not on .ml so i shouldn't have to put a sarcasm tag, right? Right?

It's very much true that the ICC mostly targets countries in Africa and Asia. However, are you sure it's a problem with the court itself? It has little power in countries that aren't members or ones that actively sabotage it.

More powerful countries stall investigations, postpone penalties (or just ignore them), and overall make the ICC's job near impossible. The ICC has no real authority or executive power to do anything about it. The best they can do is investigate crimes in countries too weak to undermine it.

Perhaps it's racism or colonialism, and the court needs to be disbanded. Or perhaps it's merely fulfilling its obligations wherever it is actually able to, and would work a lot better if the powerful countries were gone or lost their influence.

Unless they start writing arrest warrants for American and European leaders for their complicity in the Gaza genocide they are still nothing more than a farce.

Especially American leaders. Kidnapping Maduro, blockading Cuba, there is soooo much.

[–] DupaCycki@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The moment the ICC puts out an arrest warrant for any American official, they'll have all their IT systems disabled, probably some members arrested, and so on.

The US government already ordered Microsoft to disable all accounts of some ICC officials, just for Netanyahu's arrest warrant.

Perhaps it's better if they just continue persecuting criminals from Asia and Africa, instead of collapsing entirely. This way is far from fair or just, but at least some criminals get punished.

As long as USA, Russia, and Israel exist, this is the best we can hope for, unfortunately.

You just proved to point.
