Tom Kean Jr, a Republican congressman who disappeared from the Capitol for nearly four months with little explanation, re-emerged on Tuesday and said that he was absent while dealing with depression.

“Several months ago, due to health concerns, I entered the hospital for some testing. I did not believe that this would result in a long-term stay. I was given the diagnosis of depression,” Kean said in a speech on the floor of the House Tuesday morning.

Kean, who represents a swing district in New Jersey, had last voted on 5 March before disappearing, with his office in late April saying only that he was dealing with a “personal health matter” and would be back “soon”.

In the first comments he has made since returning to Washington DC, the congressman did not say directly why he had kept his mental health struggles private, but described himself as a “private person by nature”, and indicated that the treatment for depression took longer than expected.

Private person by nature, yet somehow holding public office, but not performing the duties expected of someone holding that position. A representative, who somehow does not manage to represent. smh.

A representative, who somehow does not manage to represent.

The US is burgeoning with that lot. This is not a government 'for the people' at all.

If it ever was... but to whatever extent it was, it certainly is not now.

Of the people, by the people and for the ultra-rich.

I suppose making everyone's life worse has its toll.

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 9 points 6 days ago

Supporting pedophiles must really take a toll.

maybe he went through an "are we the baddies?" realization

Party of “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” won’t like that.

That only applies to poor people.

People can get sick, but generally if you were incapacitated for months you'd make some arrangement to handle your responsibilities, or in a case like this step back so someone else can take the role.

It's nice that politician selfishness and ego provided us with a missing Republican vote during that time though.

Y'all. This man was dealing with depression, is public about it, and is reducing the stigma around it by being open about it. And y'all have nothing but ableist platitudes because he's a republican? God that's so fucked and some shameful hyperpartisan bullshit. I'm sick of republican bullshit, too. You know, the republican bullshit of downplaying mental health, denying things like depression exist, resisting treatment personally and for others, perpetuating stigma of men suffering depression by telling them to "man up", etc. And you know what? When a republican learns to fight all that bullshit, I fucking welcome it. How the fuck do y'all expect the world to become a better place when you reject good things happening? A republican doesn't wake up one day and say "ah beans, I really should stop supporting evil and oppressive policies by empowering the already rich and powerful and focus on tearing down systems of oppression built by previous legislators". The change starts with shit like this.

Meh, he's probably lying cuz he's a republican politician. He was mia for months. I appreciate your positive thinking, but I'm not giving him any fucking slack. Let's see how this plays out.

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Depression is code for he had a mental breakdown.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 days ago (2 children)

I was thinking that too. But it also could be a major scandel that he was handling.

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I wondered that as well, a mental breakdown from his crimes being blackmailed against him, as things seem to work in washington nowadays. Maybe he fucked kids, also illegally traded on non public information, he probably had to suck off Israel as penance.

You realize that I'm the mod you're harassing in DMs, right?

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

No I didn't realize you were a mod on multiple subs including white people twitter and this. If you want to abuse your power there is nothing I can do about it.

But, I don't give a care. You are part of the reason why federated social media fails, do better.

Booooo!

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

So, that's your opinion, I won't ban you for that. I will ban you for going after people like you did on people twitter. You seem bored.

How many subs do you moderate?

[–] a_non_monotonic_function@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

He's a Republican. Somebody may have evidence that he was hurting children.

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

By hurting you mean fucking children.

That would be hurting them, yes.

[–] spinne@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

My real surprises were that it was depression, not addiction, and that it was a hospital and not a snake oil "clinic" in another country

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

What makes you think he told everyone the truth?

[–] spinne@sh.itjust.works 3 points 6 days ago

That's fair, that's fair
