For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, first up is Chainsaw Man (2022), the 12-episode anime adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s 2018 manga of the same name. It follows a young man who fuses with his pet devil to fight other demons so that he can pay his debts to the yakuza. Lucky for him, he can turn his body parts into chainsaws to unleash some gory vengeance upon the villains of the world. Yes, they pretty much remade Devilman, but with chainsaws. Expect a whole lot of over-the-top bloodshed. The showrunners include people who worked on Jujutsu Kaisen (2020), Darling in the Franxx (2018), and Little Witch Academia (2017), among other shows. Episodes 7 through 12 tonight, finishing off the series, though after that remains a finale movie, which we will watch next week.
After that is Conspirators of Pleasure (1996), one of the most highly-regarded works of renowned Czech animator Jan Svankmajer, whose films Alice (1988) and Faust (1994) we previously watched. This one is done in a similar style to those two, combining live-action actors and sets with stop-motion animation to lend everything a surreal, dreamlike quality. It follows the strange fetishes of six Prague residents who dream of S&M rituals, murdering their neighbors while dressed as a chicken, and having sex with giant fish; less transgressive are those characters who fixate on watching the news and inhaling tiny balls of bread. All of this is done in Svankmajer’s usual absurdly-comic fashion. Great reviews for this all around, so let’s check it out.
