The Optimates (conservatives) thought that recent dissatisfaction with some of Caesar's policies (often criticized for not being radical enough), or some innate love of the Roman people for the ultrawealthy conservatives who had spent the past ~100 years at that point assassinating Populare (reformist) politicians, would lead to them being heralded as heroes.
