Can confirm that this phenomenon exists at a similar rank level and position in several nation's services.
As they should. The lower enlisted can get away with being young and dumb if caught. The E-5 and above have plausible deniability. However they can point out that Schmuckatellis actions allowed a mission/op/whatever to be completed and will counsel them to pinky promise never doing it again.
Because those more senior enlisted have all played that role before as well.
