Cannabis was mostly indigenous to south Asia. Some probably traveled through trade routes, but for something coming from the other side of the Himalayas to be "integrated in daily life" is a bit of a stretch.

The article indicates that it was a grain, so my guess it was hemp cultivated for the seeds. The article seems to go off the rails at the end, but the beginning part was fascinating from a historical perspective.
