A place to find suggestions for video games! For example, you might create a post looking for recommendations for a game to play with a friend, or a game that is easy to play if you just broke your dominant hand. Or you might post a list of games that let you use a whip as a weapon. A lot of rules for conduct here are pretty obvious (don't be a jerk, stay on-topic) so I'll bold the weird ones.

Rules

Please stay on-topic: post requests for games that match some criteria you specify, lists of games with a certain element, or something otherwise relevant to helping people find games that match certain criteria.
- If you're looking to find the name of a particular game or video game series you forgot, you should go to !TipOfMyJoystick@retrolemmy.com. This community is for fielding suggestions for games, not for finding one specific video game.
- If you're making a post that is suggesting games, it should be a list of games. This is partially to help prevent the community from being overrun by people just suggesting their favorite game, and devs suggesting you play their latest game. This is about posts, not comments. It's okay to comment on a post asking for gaming suggestions with just one game.
Don’t be a jerk. This covers bigotry and discrimination, which includes but is not limited to homophobia, racism, sexism, etc.
Please don’t directly link to pirated content.
When advertising something you have worked on, please use common sense for what is spammy. Self-promotion isn't totally banned: if someone asked for an RPG where you can play a lich, and the game you worked on is an RPG where you can play a lich, you can definitely answer with your RPG. I reserve the right to change this rule to be more specific about what exactly counts as spammy and what does not, but I feel I’ll know it when I see it and trust most posters to operate in good faith.

I've never REALLY played Minecraft (I've only messed around with creative and building things), never played but am somewhat interested in Hytale, and never played but very interested in Vintage Story.

MC has a mod pack called Abyssal Ascent, which stacks like 8-12 different dimensions on top of each other (like the nether, plus a bunch of other custom modded ones) and you have to climb your way out from essentially the center of the world. Haven't played this one either, but I've seen some cool videos and read about it.

I'm kinda looking for something that would scratch that modpack itch, but in reverse. Something that starts on the surface, and just keeps going down, finding different layers the deeper you go.

I'm also cool with general pros/cons between MC, Hytale, and Vintage Story; I'm leaning heavily toward VS.

Edit: I appreciate the suggestions so far, I've added a couple to my wishlist. I would like to add that I probably should have specified that I prefer 3D games to 2D, and I put "depth" in quotes in the title because I'm looking for physical depth to dig down into, but I do like deep mechanics and systems too.

Edit 2: I got Vintage Story. I played for a couple hours on my first world, but I think I'll treat it like Zomboid where I learn a little more each time I start a new save, because I feel like I kinda already fucked myself with the world settings lol.

If you're looking for depth, Hytale probably isn't for you yet. The game is still early in development, what exists is awesome but it doesn't have that much content or depth yet. I'd compare it to Minecraft before the end update.

Vintage Story can get pretty deep, but be aware it's a lot slower and more hardcore than the other two. A lot of your time will be spent just trying to stay alive. Staying warm, getting food, farming, spending a long time crafting things like pots out of clay... You don't even get to mine until the mid-game, and finding copper can be a real hassle. Honestly it might be what you're looking for if you're into survival games. That said, I wouldn't say it has a TON of content, it's more that everything takes so much time to make that you'll spend ages finishing what's here.

In terms of raw content and depth there isn't any block game that can match the depth and content of Minecraft with tons of mods, I think.

I've seen plenty of comments online that pretty much say exactly what you said: Hytale is more just hanging out and having fun, Vintage Story is more an actual survival sim with tons of crazy deep mechanics.

I'll probably get VS then. Tbh I'm just about there, all I have to do is click "purchase"

Maybe Subnautica ? It all takes place in an alien ocean, starting with you having to hold your breath to swim down to coral reefs for resources and at the end you are piloting a submarine to the deepest, darkest depths of the ocean. It has some base building to it as well, is this the kind of game you are looking for?

I've played Minecraft, but all the mod packs I've played have been like assorted bundles. Big mix of automation, magic, quality of life, and other stuff. I've never tried one like what you described, and I also haven't played Hytale or Vintage Story so I can't really help you out there

I do have both Subnauticas, but I'm wanting something where I can actually alter the world directly similar to Minecraft.

I do have Noita and I do like it. I'm wanting something that I can also build up and play a little more long term than roguelike

I haven't played it myself, but I believe Caves of Qud might be what you want.

EDIT: Just saw your OP edit about physical depth and digging down and will raise you Noita - another one I haven't played (and still in 2D, granted) but that could probably keep you busy for a while.

Maybe Starbound? You explore planets isolated from each other and can alter most stuff to your heart's content, as well as making modding pretty simple, relatively speaking.

I very recently started trying the demo for Casualties: Unknown, a survival game that seems to have that exact layers thing you're asking for. You're dropped into the opening of a vast cave in an alien planet and you have you venture down through eleven layers. The demo has five.

It's brutally difficult and very grim in tone. It's often compared to Rain World or Project Zomboid. I haven't even managed to make it through the first layer.
