Therapy, and/or some deep self reflection.

Humor can be be used to deflect, and if one finds themselves doing this too often, it could be a pattern of avoidant behavior. When the mask of humor is peeled back, what is there? Often it's fear. Fear of connection, being known and the vulnerability that accompanies this.

These are just broad generalizations, however, and each person's self reflection will be different.
