He knew where the war hawks said it would go. It's so weird; now that they've got their war, they don't actually know what to do with it.

It's out of his control, his only options are to claim victory and walk away with his tail between his legs, or to go to full scale war which is risky seeing as how much this war is hated at home and abroad.

In the end, it will depend on what Israel wants him to do.

They thought the initial strikes would be enough. They did not have a plan b. Trump is reduced to negotiating with himself on maga-twitter. The most competent military strategists have been replaced, which allowed Israel to goad the US into finally "pulling the trigger". Israel is I think, getting what it wants which is cover to annex more land from Palestine, Lebanon and Syria.
