The last 5 orders that I've made - with intermittent attempts at boycotting the store between them - have all had something wrong with them. Amazon literally can no longer fulfill an order completely up to par: There's always something that you have to refund, resend back or just gripe about. Minor details, big problems, there's always something.

They're an "always something" service. Yes, there are products you can't get elsewhere. Yes, the price is often cheaper. Yes, they're easier to use than others. But they simply fail at the simple task of actually fulfilling your order more often than not. I've stopped thinking about where to move my purchases to simply starting to reconsider whether I need a particular thing in the first place. It's pretty much the only way you can get off these services :( That, and being infuriated over and over and over again by the inadequacy of the service.

I never had an account but I stopped purchasing from them a year ago when JB showed up at the Donut's inauguration, I don't miss it one bit.

Good work! I cancelled my prime subscription and have not ordered anything from Amazon 2 months ago. When my current sub time ends in October I plan to also delete my account.

I've been making a more conscious effort to avoid buying American ever since Trump got re-elected (both for reducing dependency or American tech firms, as well as not finanicially supporting a country with a fascist government) and Amazon was one of the easiest companies to cut out of my life.

There's still plenty of alternative webstores in the Netherlands at least.

Would you happen to have links to some of your favorites? I'd love to start cutting off Amazon, but that's going to be a journey.... I know it'll be worth it in the end though!

This reminds me. Where do you guys buy stuff like accessories for less known devices, e.g., retro handhelds? I buy everything on my local marketplaces, but these I can only find on Amazon or Temu/AliExpress. Any recommendations?

[โ€“] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 6 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I don't buy that stuff, and I got rid of my Amazon account a couple years ago, but I still buy stuff there occasionally. sometimes it's just the only place I can find something, and I'm okay with that. as long as I'm minimizing using it.

[โ€“] fisch@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago

Same. All expensive purchases are made using European online shops. The only time I use Amazon is for cheap fringe stuff that I can't find anywhere else and where quality doesn't matter.

Dont let perfect be the enemy of good.

[โ€“] cheers_queers@lemmy.zip 4 points 5 days ago

ebay existed when amazon was a bookstore, i still use it..

And replaced it with what?

[โ€“] HuudaHarkiten@piefed.social 18 points 5 days ago (1 children)

A shop 1,6km away from my house

[โ€“] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 14 points 5 days ago (10 children)

Thatโ€™s a big-ass shop.

When I lived in Japan it was easy to kill my Amazon account because of a little site called Rakuten. Basically, Japanese Amazon.

Now I live in the EU, and Rakuten sellers do not ship outside of Japan. Thereโ€™s suppose to be a global shipment service, but itโ€™s limited, shipping costs are high, and I cannot get them to confirm my address either way. So Iโ€™m having to rely on Amazon again until I can find a like marketplace website that is based in Europe.

[โ€“] HuudaHarkiten@piefed.social 13 points 5 days ago

Thatโ€™s a big-ass shop.

Well, it doesn't have to be huge, since I don't need the whole of amazons inventory on a weekly basis.

Nothing. If I need something, I get off my couch and go in a store, even better if family owned. This way, I purchase something only if I really need it. I'm saving a lot of money by avoiding compulsive shopping, I help my community, and Bezos can go fuck himself.

[โ€“] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 4 points 5 days ago

local shops, direct sales from the manufacturer, simply other companies that aren't quite as shitty, and then when I absolutely cannot find something elsewhere and absolutely need the item, I go back to amazon.

โ€žThank you for your attention to this matter!โ€œ ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿป

[โ€“] TRock@feddit.dk 1 points 4 days ago

I agree with the sentiment, but is there any recent news which would make people do this?

[โ€“] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 3 points 5 days ago

Congratulations, seriously.

I stopped using mine years ago but still got a monthly "bill" of $0.00 for aws services for some reason.

I'm happy to report I've finally fully deleted my account. I feel so light. ๐Ÿฅฐ

I've stopped buying at Amazon a good while ago, I find most of what I need in smaller European web stores, I'll buy computer, household, garden and farm stuff mostly. Also, small local shops around here will order stuff they don't have in stock.

[โ€“] Lanske@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

Ditched them and my prime account a year ago, welcome to the club!

Well done! We haven't looked back

[โ€“] AndyMFK@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Better late then never my friend! I got rid of mine about 10 years ago. If a product only exists on Amazon, then I don't want it

[โ€“] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 3 points 5 days ago

It's genuinely surprising how you just don't have to use it and it's not a problem. The closest I've come is ordering something from an individual and it comes in an amazon box

It feels like you'd miss it but it you just try to find an alternative or wait a week, either you'll find your alternative or more often even realise you never needed the thing in the first place.

And for anyone who is like "but I CAN'T get this one thing that I NEED anywhere else" I believe you. So just get that one thing from amazon and try your best to find everything else from another source.

You aren't helpless.
