Funny if China hadn’t spent the past two decades bullying its near neighbours in the Asia-Pacific region they would be in a prime position to gain new friends due to this Israeli-America genocide.
Indonesia is one of the largest and most populous countries in the world, not to mention being predominantly Muslim and oil rich. They stood up to US during last round of trade wars.
Just days ago they capitulated to Trumps tariff threats with an unfair deal.
The agreement, grandly titled Toward a New Golden Age for the U.S.–Indonesia Alliance, promised tariff exemptions for key exports like palm oil, coffee, cocoa, and rubber. In exchange, Jakarta pledged to scrap barriers on more than 99% of U.S. imports and commit to some $33 billion in purchases of American energy, aircraft, and agricultural products.
And they have only further entwined their military with the US
According to the U.S. State Department, the nations’ long-standing security relationship has evolved to encompass counterterrorism, maritime security, peacekeeping operations, and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR). The expansion reflects growing alignment between Jakarta and Washington.
Indonesia may have a large population but their military is even weaker than Australia’s, they cannot defend against Chinese aggression on their own.
That’s one sided view of the events. Indonesia has also enough weight to make Apple move their manufacturing there, which Trump envies and lashes out against. Both sides have accomplished some of their goals and had to give some ground which is expected in a trade deal between two independent regional powers of similar size.
