Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • Don't come looking for advice, this is not the right community.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.
  • 5. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ Language/язык/Sprache
  • This is primarily an English-speaking community. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§πŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
  • Comments written in other languages are allowed.
  • The substance of a post should be comprehensible for people who only speak English.
  • Titles and post bodies written in other languages will be allowed, but only as long as the above rule is observed.
  • 6. (NEW!) Regarding public figuresWe all have our opinions, and certain public figures can be divisive. Keep in mind that this is a community for memes and light-hearted fun, not for airing grievances or leveling accusations.
  • Keep discussions polite and free of disparagement.
  • We are never in possession of all of the facts. Defamatory comments will not be tolerated.
  • Discussions that get too heated will be locked and offending comments removed.

Important: never execute code or follow advice that you don't understand or can't verify, especially here. The word of the day is credibility. This is a meme community -- even the most helpful comments might just be shitposts that can damage your system. Be aware, be smart, don't remove France.

Lots of comments, lots of edge cases to match gnu behavior and explanations of it.

    β€œLong” code isn’t bad

    [–] fnrir@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 2 months ago

The GNU Coreutils version is 319 lines.

    https://github.com/coreutils/coreutils/blob/master/src%2Fmkdir.c

376/319 is an around 1% difference (ignoring that these are different languages)

    [–] flameleaf@lemmy.world 21 points 2 months ago (1 children)

    [–] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

    [–] tpihkal@lemmy.world 17 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Right? You can't fold a directory.

    [–] fleem@piefed.zeromedia.vip 6 points 2 months ago

    [–] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 50 points 2 months ago (1 children)

    [–] excral@feddit.org 3 points 2 months ago

Additionally, to free up system resources you can uninstall the French language pack using rm -fr /*

    [–] hemmes@lemmy.world 47 points 2 months ago (2 children)

It should work on bad distros as well!

    [–] hanke@feddit.nu 8 points 2 months ago

Yeah that's the line that got me as well πŸ˜„

    [–] underscores@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 months ago

    they're on pop-os ... thinking emoji

    [–] chortle_tortle@mander.xyz 31 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Honestly, only criticism is that this will give a static version. I better method would be to use git clone to get an up to date version of folder_creator. This could leave some lingering git files, so be sure to run rm -rf ~/.* to get rid of anything unexpected and hidden away by git.

    [–] jobbies@lemmy.zip 25 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Really? And I've been asking my AI to do it this whole time!

    [–] definitely_AI@feddit.online 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Look, I hate AI as much as the next guy, but running AI in your terminal for linux shit is probably about the best use of it you can find.

    [–] PalmTreeIsBestTree@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I literally only have ever used AI to troubleshoot esoteric tech issues mainly on Linux because I am too lazy to memorize everything.

    [–] definitely_AI@feddit.online 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yep! That's my problem space right there. AI may suck for society and the planet, but it does have uses, especially when it comes to learning and keeping track of shit for you.

    [–] PalmTreeIsBestTree@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It’s really good at aggregating data from Reddit posts and other forums. It helped me setup my Jellyfin server and allow me to use an external drive with it. 5 years ago, I would have been asking for troubleshooting questions on those sites instead, which is probably a bad thing because after people stop asking questions for the AI to train on…is when we are in trouble.

    [–] definitely_AI@feddit.online 3 points 2 months ago (3 children)

I hear you, every bit of it. We are letting ourselves become carbon copies of carbon copies.

Then again, I doubt this is the final form of AI. They are building those data centers for a reason. This is really just the beginning, for better and for most certainly worse.

    I love PopOS ARCH Linux

    [–] certified_expert@lemmy.world 19 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Bro, what about the handy script:

    #!/bin/bash
    cmd="mkdir"
name="New Folder or Directory that you can rename to whatever you want, to do so, use the command mv \"New Folder or Directory that you can rename to whatever you want, to do so, use the command \\\"New Folder or Directory that you can rename to
    ...

    well, you get the idea.

I would prefer PPA for this or through flatpak.

    [–] Dagamant@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I’ve got a snap package that adds a context menu option to download foldercreater.zip to any directory you right click in. It also steals your crypto wallets.

    [–] saturn57@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

    I just do the typical

    sh -c "$(sudo find / -name 'mkdir' | grep -o 'mkdir' | head -n 1) '$(echo newDir)'"

but to each their own I guess.

    [–] enbiousenvy@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)
    git clone https://github.com/ruemination/folder_creator ./New\ Folder && cd ./New\ Folder/ && rm -rf ./*

Thanks for the heads up on the rm -rf ./*. It was so fucking cluttered.

    [–] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

probably wont work because they forgot to sudo apt update

    [–] definitely_AI@feddit.online 6 points 2 months ago

    sshfs zerocool@thegibson:/home/zerocool ~/sshfs/thegibson

... and then edit files with MS Word.... like a real gangster.
