Fighting violence with a violence.

Self inflicted violence the dumbest kind. Another good idea Eve.

You think that South Africa is magically the only country without gender based violence?

[–] Pricklesthemagicfish@reddthat.com 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Great, as a South African, why do you think all the people in the photo are white and wearing tacticool and what are they actually dogwhistling about?

Because as an American I smell lynch mob rhetoric.

I'm also not particularly impressed by the claim that they're at "conflict area" levels of assault when the numbers they're citing are slightly above the global average.

Not that those numbers are acceptable either, but something stinks about the way this is being presented.

Oh the people in the picture are (as much as one can tell from a picture) pretty much exactly as you expect. Middle to upper middle class, right-of-center, almost certainly Afrikaans. Unfortunately as far my experience in SA (I left over a decade ago), the men that this kind of woman are likely to be with are also overwhelmingly what you'd expect from middle to upper class, quite right of centre men. Machismo, aggression, bro-code.

I can't speak to whether people outside these demographics are also arming themselves for this purpose, but the gender based violence in South Africa (at least 10+ years ago) is very real. From the bits I've caught from my friends back there, it has got worse wrt gender based violence.

I don't know if I've given you a satisfactory answer to what you'd like to know? My head's a bit foggy today. Feel free to poke me if I didn't address something you'd hoped I would

in a country where gender-based violence is such a critical problem that it was declared a national disaster by the government in November.
