There are so many aftermarket parts for the old style ones you can almost assemble a new one from scratch

I like the concept. But I wonder, is there something similar that supports more modern codecs. (opus) Hell maybe even an open board design using something like an esp32 and an SD card reader. And if not why not. Wish I knew much about PCB design. Tiny low cost audio device a bit thicker than a stick of gum would be pretty awesome.

I got one and put linux on it. Now its very easy to load up music.

I know I got a latest-gen nano last year for this very reason. That’s the only model I’m aware of that has Bluetooth.

One of the closer things I've got to a "job" is modernizing iPods for people. Didn't read the article but they're great. USB-C, bluetooth, battery replacement and storage upgrade are kinda the standard upfit, $150-200. Highly recommend. 5th gen classic is "best" but it's pretty polished across the range at this point

I love the idea but would never personally go back to a separate music player. The extra cost and inconvenience of having to charge and carry a separate device just doesn't seem appealing versus sticking all my flac files on an SD card in my phone.
