How does the age inference model work?

We leverage an advanced machine learning model developed at Discord to predict whether a user falls into a particular age group based on patterns of user behavior and several other signals associated with their account on Discord. We only use these signals to assign users to an age group when our confidence level is high; when it isn't, users go through our standard age assurance flow to confirm their age. We do not use your message content in the age estimation model.

Completely opaque explanation of how they use AI to guess your age with a claim that message content is not used. With no independent way to actually verify that claim, I don't trust them at all.

Which is also probably why they want users to submit id's, they want a population of proven age groups to train their data on further. I imagine the system right now does not have a high confidence level at all

Already working on getting my friends to switch to telegram. Anyone got any better alternatives?

Depends on what you and your friends need.

If you often use text, group video calls and screen share, Movim is probably the best option currently (though there is no application audio when screen sharing yet). It supports encryption too!

If you use mostly text, and just send video or voice files to the group to be played in-app, Deltachat is really slick and encrypted (but it doesn't do voice calls).

Too late, I already spun up a matrix server with livekit; only took a couple hours.

Looking forward to seeing these tools be refined, between this and the EU investing into the alternatives, it's another win for open source.

Too late, I already deleted my account.

So why did Discord just have a breach resulting in the theft of 70K government ID's?

Like. You can't lose a bunch of PII and then turn around and require age verification.
